Full Version: Is it possible to find a Frauenhofer mp3 codec?

I just ask because I've heard a few rips made with a version of the Frauenhofer codec and it sounded much better than many of my mp3 rips. I know, I know, it's possibly very outdated and limited in comparison to the latest lame versions, and I need to perform some extensive listening tests to prove anything, but my interest is piqued.

Any assistance would be great. Thanks.

If you use XP and have WMP10 installed:

If it's 128kbps and has stuff above 16khz, then chances are it's l3codecp.acm version 1.2.x, aka 'radium'. Good luck finding it these days though.

MusicMatch can do MP3 encodes. Uses Frauenhoffer. Can also do MP3-PRO encode/decode.

Please, please, it's Fraunhofer not Frauenhofer - it has nothing to do with women!

Interesting.

Upon viewing the readme.txt file he mentioned a bug in the FhG encoder from WMP 10 'Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)' but he didn't go into details and explain exactly what it was, but I found out what it was as something had perplexed me for some time wondering why WMP 10 would use J-Stereo and other rippers wouldn't when encoding to FhG.

If enabling the High Quality option in anything like his CLI app, CDex, EAC, etc., it causes J-Stereo to not get used on many bitrate selections such as 160, 192, etc. Unticking High Quality in CDex, and choosing Low Quality in EAC fixed the issue and J-Stereo is used. Albeit not that it really matters as there's LAME.
