Full Version: Any non-computer device that can play mp3 files from DVD?

I'm looking for either a home theater component player or a portable that will play .mp3 files from a DVD disc.

I looked through all DVD players (home and portables) currently carried by Crutchfield. Nothing.

Nearly all of them play mp3 CD-R discs, but apparently mp3 from a DVD-R is difficult to implement.

So far, the only device I can find that will do this is a JVC car audio/DVD deck with their "Giga MP3" feature. Don't want car audio though (yet).

Thanks!

Some JVC home DVD recorders, and JVC home DVD players can play them off DVD+/- media, although some load the disc rather slowly.

Edit:
An older or new inexpensive PC may be the solution though with a large hdd, hooked up to your home stereo.

I just bought a cheap philips DVD player for about $50 specifically because it plays Divx and xvid files. It also says it plays MP3 from DVDR though I have not tested it. Dont remember the model number offhand as I'm at work.

Probably the Philip DVP-642. I've got one and it works for MP3s on DVD. It's not gapless, and it only shows 11 characters of a filename (no ID3 info), but it works.

My fathers Arcam DV137 does. It also plays divx, xvid, aac, ogg vorbis. biggrin.gif

Think it may be a bit pricy, never looked at the ££ myself though.

I found a product brochure for this. It says:

"Replays MP3 and WMA files from CD, with dedicated on-screen browser"

But you're sure it plays them from DVDs as well?

One place has it listed for 1250 pounds. That's about $2000, right? Ouch, yeah that's pricy.

I know this really doesn't answer your question, but just as a point of interest, the DVD player in my car, which is normally for the Navigation DVD, will play MP3 DVDs. Even DL DVD. Allows you to navigate the folder structure, displays the ID3 tags, shows elapsed time, etc. Very cool. Of course you lose NAV while you are playing MP3s.

It's a BMW 550i. All recent BMWs with NAV systems can do this.

I *really* didn't want to spend that much. ;-)

laugh.gif Getting a new BMW would solve the problem altogether.
I'll have to see if my JVC DVD recorder will playback DL DVD's never tried it.

Why not take a DVD full of mp3's to a local store and see if their units they sell will play the disc!

At least here in Germany, most players for sale are not connected to a power source so you can only see what the players look like and that's it. sad.gif

Some cheap DVD player we bought for work played MP3s from DVDs, don't remember the model but I'd expect a lot of cheapo DVD players to be similar.

My Tevion DVD-4000 I bought from Aldi Germany somewhere in 2004 plays mp3 files from DVD[+/-]R perfectly. If you can read Geman language, you can find a lot of info on this forum
