You should find some of the information you're looking for on David Robinson's MP3 decoder test site which Gabriel has put back online at http://mp3decoders.mp3-tech.org/.

The section "Burning mp3s to audio CD" of this page might be particularly interesting.

i was specifically wondering which decoder cdrwin used.

CDRWin uses the mp3 decoding engine from Xaudio. Decoding quality is OK.

yup...

regarding the cdrwin 5xx.. it uses the padus engine..
and the Xaudio decoder..

the original cdrwin is pretty much based on cdrtools..
and as of mp3 decoding.. am not shure.. fhgEnc/blade based ??

but anyway.. i recomend using BAO (burnatonce.com)
are a awesome frontend for the org. cdrdao/cdrtools
(as compared to cdrwin)

just put your decoders in the dir.
support: MAD, OGG, MPC and AAC.exe

still on 0.91.. and decoding is done on "temp"
before burning.. but with the soon released 0.92..
the new cdrtools.. would offer on-the-fly.. cd-text
and dvdrecord as i understand..

cdrdao is the best way to burn audio..
so why settle for something less.
