Full Version: Bose 901 question

First post, and looking for free advice...

I found a rather old pair of Bose 901's (with stands) in working condition that an elderly lady friend is using to stand flowerpots on.
Perhaps about 20 years old, I don't know (the speakers, that is - not the owner).
Since they are hardly ever being used, I could get them off her for quite cheap - my question is, are they worth it, or a waste of spece?

I've tried to read reviews on the Bose 901 but I find them to be very polarized - some people love the 901, others trash em. And Bose in general seems to be bashed a lot.

I'm not an audio expert (I'm the opposite) and I'm not rich, I just want speakers with robust solid sound and the ability to deal with plenty of bass.
Most of my listening is to a collection of 60's & 70's reggae & ska, which is usually very bass-heavy and often quite badly produced/mixed. Source is vinyl, CD and MP3.

Audio set-up is in a 7 x 5m room, not much furniture, flat ceiling. If that matters.

Opinions? Thanks.

If you can get 'em for less than a hundred bucks and they still work, they're worth it.

Be sure to check the condition of the surrounds (foam around the speaker cone) before you consider buying them. They oxidize and fall apart with age.

I just ran into a friend the other day who thought he had gotten a great deal on some old 901’s until he realized that he needed to replace the surrounds --- many, many surrounds...

After 20+ years, I can guarantee the surrounds are very dry and will fall apart quickly - especially with bassy music. Also, these speakers (and Bose in general) are terrible for bassy music. I'd pass unless you can get them for nothing (or next to nothing). Then you can boot them on Ebay for too much money. wink.gif
