I have red that Lame 3.97 b2 uses some gain informatin in default. I use this command line: -V1 --vbr-new and I do not know, if those encoded files have some replaygain data. I have noticed nothing in my player. So, is aplication like MP3 gain still necessary? Then I will use max no clip gain, because setting of 89 dB sounds too quiet. OK?

The gain information that is calculated during encoding is stored only in the LAME tag of the file and is not (yet) used by any player, so you still have to use MP3Gain if you want to avoid clipping issues.

It's used by in_!mpg123 and in_mad (patched version by MoSPDude).
