Full Version: Proposing two new tags: PARTNUMBER and TOTALPARTS

We're all familiar with DISCNUMBER/TOTALDISCS, or TRACKNUMBER/TOTALTRACKS for marking, well, just them - now here's an idea: instead of adding such info to the TITLE field (which is incorrect - it's not part of the title), you could use PARTNUMBER/TOTALPARTS. Any suggestions, comments, etc.?

And what are they for?

And what are they for?

For... multi-part.. songs.

Say, Another Brick in the Wall.

Are you referring to single tracks with multiple parts or multiple tracks which are labelled as parts of a single song? huh.gif

Another Brick in the Wall

Actually the Part names are in the title. Look at the discs.

Since when have disks been the be all and end all of titles? And technically, it is meta data - if you think about it.

Edit:

Both.

I don't really understand. So, if you had one big file with several parts, would it be something like this?

Long Song 1000 For The Justice Of Liberty.mp3:
TITLE: Long Song 1000 For The Justice Of Liberty
PART1: The Initiation
PART2: Defenestration
PART3: Mitigation

Or would you actually split a single track into multiple separate files and tag them?

Green Day - Jesus Of Suburbia

TITLE: Jesus Of Suburbia
PARTNUMBER: 1
TOTALPARTS: 5

TITLE: Whatever the next part was called
PARTNUMBER: 2
TOTALPARTS: 5

etc.

Let's use the example I first gave - Another Brick in the Wall. They are seperate tracks on the CD (they're not even next to each other but that doesn't matter.)

I rip them as:

CD 1/03 Another Brick in the Wall (Part I)
CD 1/05 Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)
CD 1/12 Another Brick in the Wall (Part III)

Each one has their title set to Another Brick in the Wall and TOTALPARTS=03. Part 1 has 01, 2 has 02, etc.

It just seems more correct to me.

edit: And if they're all one track on the CD but marked as seperate parts, I don't split them because it's "really" one song.

To be honest, I would just tag the tracks as they are on the CD, as has already been said. Are there really enough cases which would merit this? I think the part number/letter/hieroglyphic should remain a part of the title.

...and I thought I was having a hard time just to tag multiple artists............... blink.gif crying.gif

I disagree -- part tagging with roman numerals or whatever would be useful for operas!

Interesting concept.

I recall a friend's CD player which would show the part number using Roman numerals. It was a Rush album, and it was a single song that had multiple parts.

I guess this must be like multiple INDEX in CUE files?

INDEX 01
INDEX 02
INDEX 03

for one track... I think I've seen Enigma albums use this too...
