so I have this iPod. it won't do anything except say, "Do not disconnect."
I've installed/updated iTunes and the iPod software, restarted and reset everything
anybody else have this problem and get it resolved?
I mean to say that it says do not disconnect when I have it plugged into my computer
it seems to work fine when not plugged in
and there's no iPod icon in my iTunes

This should go in the "Audio hardware" forum. If you have a back-up of your music, try using the ipod updater to reset your ipod to factory settings. It should then work as normal.

It's meant to do that when it's plugged in.

Actually, the last sentence in his post is what's important. I was about to say the same as you did, but noticed he said that iTunes didn't display his device.

What OS are you using? If it's WinXP, does your computer recognize the iPod as a USB device when you plug it in?
Can you view your iPod as a drive in Windows Explorer, i.e., does it have a drive letter assigned to it?
I suspect your computer might be trying to assign the iPod a drive letter that's already taken, in which case it's an easy issue to fix.

Is your windows up to date as much as it can be? Did you try other USB ports?
Normally, windows should add removable drives when you plug one in, so it seems you have a software issue.

1 other thing I thought of. When you first plug in your iPod (ie after you restart, unplug your iPod when the Do Not Disconnect icon if gone then plug it back into your computer when it is FULLY booted), does iTunes pop up at all?
You might have it setup so that iTunes automatically updates your iPod then ejects it automatically. This will stop your computer from seeing it as a external hard drive and will make the icon dissapear from iTunes. If so, then, in iTunes, just go to Edit, then preferences. Click on the iPod tab and put a check next to the option of enabling iPod disk use. This will still allow iTunes to update your iPod automatically but it won't just eject it.

I found a thread on apple's site somewhere and someone wrote they had the same problem with a 3rd generation iPod and that with iPods that old that the only way to restore them is with a firewire
I have a friend with a mac working on it and he was able to get the restore started
Im crossing my fingers that it works completely
thanks for the help everybody
I had this problem with an iPod mini model. I downloaded "Ipod Updater" from Apple's Website, installed the drivers and just updated my firmware, using a pc with Windows XP SP2. Now it works flawlessly.

may be you try to work on a MAC version IPOD, instead of a PC version IPOD ?
as far as I remember, this is not possible to use with windows.

True, but on the first launch of the ipod stuff on windows, the HPFS partition is converted automatically to fat32. There should not be any issue, unless you plugged you ipod on a mac the first time was is connected to a computer. A restoration will probably suffice if the utility can detect the ipod.

A Windows computer will detect a hard drive regardless of what file system it is formatted as - the iPod Software Updater will reformat the iPod to FAT32 and install the iPod's software on it. Obviously the solution to figure out whether the iPod or the computer is at fault is: Try the iPod on another computer, Mac or PC.
