Full Version: Speaker cable through a wall to another room

I live in an apartment. I want to drill a hole in my one bedroom to the other bedroom and send speaker cable through the hole to set up multi room speakers.

I have found that there are speaker wall plates that you can use.

My question is this, can you set up the plates on each side of the wall with a short piece of cable in the wall to connect the plates up. Then connect your cable to the new wall terminals. Or are these wall plates only meant for direct cable hook up like how they work in a speaker box.

I hope this makes sense.
Any help would be appreciated.

You can set up plate but it will mean there are two mechanical connections whihc may degrade the signal path. Why not just pass the wire through intact? cool.gif

I think you'll like the looks of using the two plates. You COULD just pass the wire through the wall but your idea is a good one imho and I doubt you'll hear any differance with the added conections rolleyes.gif

Of course you can - solder the connections behind the plate. Gold plated external contacts may increase reliability for rarely changed connections, otherwise there is nothing to worry about.

My problem with bringing the cables straight through the walls is just the look of it.

I would buy two plastic electrical boxes from your local hardware store, remove the nails and break off the tabs. (As little as fifty cents) Using a stud finder locate the nearest stud where you want your plates. Cut a hole in the drywall on each side of the wall the size of the box, making sure both holes are between the same two studs. Run your wire between the holes, then thread the wire through the boxes. I use drywall screws to attach the boxes to the studs. The screws go right through the box at an angle and into the stud. Tie the wire down in each box so you don't accidentally lose it. Use quality connectors and solder your wires. I don't think even an avid audiophile with a spectrum analyzer could hear the difference between straight wire and two quality connections.

Except of course for that brief stop shile debarking from one bus and boarding the next.
