Anyone seen the (news) video clip of Iraq turning over the weapons report to the U.N.? The CD-ROMs pictured are Samsung 80-minute 16x, I have some... they are cheap and crappy... LOL! laugh.gif
ErikS
Finally they bring up a subject in the news that has some relevance for everyday life! Everybody should be warned about those CD-R:s... What better way could you imagine? smile.gif
Nexx9
Probably just the usual instance of product placement. Proceeds - like oil money (from Elf et al) - to *again* not go to the Iraqi children. So what else is new? Nex

I don't know what your criteria to call a Samsung disc "crappy".
Which is the manufacturer of your discs? I already bought 24x certified 80min Samsung "cheapos" (0'54€) premium discs on slim cases (that looks like garbage eh?) so I looked at the manufacturer:

Prodisc.
The disc dye is phthalocyanine type 9
.........it is crappy then? biggrin.gif dry.gif
Prodisc is one of the best manufacturers out there, with Acer, MPO, Kodak and Ritek. Sorry Kodak stopped developing their awesome but horrible label-side discs....

However, if your Samsung discs are made by CMC or Princo I shut up then biggrin.gif tongue.gif

I'm pretty sure they're CMC Magnetics (but would have to check). I do know that the top layer scrapes off so easily, better sell them to someone who bites their nails... tongue.gif

Edit -- it's easily possible that Samsung changed manufacturers between their 16x and 24x branded CD-R's... so you can't necessarily compare one to the other (mine came on a spool I think). I haven't found any really good brands myself, except from "specialty" places like cdrplanet.com.

Have you tried MPO's Hi-Space Gold or Hi-Space Carbon CDs?
Carbon (My master CDs) are pretty good, thought Pio2001 has noticed some little C2 puking out the disc, while the Gold doesn't. Kodak is also known by its quality. However....label side is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!

My burner doesn't support C2 errors, but when I made a fresh copy I noted the original tracks' CRC and noted 'em into the inside paper of the disc.
I double-check them with DVD & burner and..... happy.gif

No bit is wrong nor in Hi-Space Carbons or Samsung! well, my burner is a Yamaha 8424SCSI, not very fast at burning (8x) but both at 8x and 4x performs a perfect audio burn without any bit wrong happily matching the noted reference CRCs. However, DAE is SLOW AS HELL. Both drives@3'4x.
Pio2001
To be exact, I noticed C2 errors on CD ROM only (errors reported by CDSpeed), not audio. The difference is that CD ROM are read faster.

In three or more years alot of us may be saying this disc is cheap and crappy (any brand) when the disc is full of read errors.

Nonetheless I don't see the importance in what CD brand Iraq uses, or even further (getting away from what the post is about) which CD Writing software they used, or which brand of paper they used for the 11,000+ page declaration.

Andavari, I guess that's why it was posted in the Off-topic section.

Yes, that's why I posted it in off-topic... I thought it was kinda funny, but not relevant to anything in particular.

Umm, isn't Ritek one of the WORST manufacturers? They sell beside the Princo's here in Canada for 33 cents...

No. If you're looking at the info at www.cdrmedia.com it's much more outdated than r3mix in the mp3 issue.

Ritek remade itself long time ago. It's one of the best now.
