Hi,

I am looking for a new optical drive. I just want to create exact audio copies. So it doesn't matter if it can't write CD/DVDs or read DVDs. It must be very good in reading CDs, especially scratched ones and those not corresponding with the Rainbow Books standards. Any drive suggestions?

Personally I use Plextor drives. I have a Plextor Premium and the 708?? (it's the 8x DVD burning model). Both rip quickly and accurately. They burn quite well too. Not sure if Plextor still sells the Premium drive.

Just as important (probably more important actually) is what ripping software you use. Personally, I use EAC (exact audio copy). Surf/search the forums here and you will find plenty of info on it. It's quite stable, accurate, and flexible.

Cheers!

I having been reading that thread. That's why the Plextor PX-230A is my favourite.

I am just wondering if there are any other drives you can recommend as burning/DVD is not necessary for me.

The PX-230A isn't a DVD burner.

True, but most people here asking for a drive with good reading qualities want extras like LiteScribe or a drive which also burns CDs/DVDs or reads DVDs.

So looks like the PX-230A would be fine for me.
