hi there, I was testing the mp3enc demo that is limited to encoding only 30 seconds, and I really like the quality at low CBR bitrates (e.g. 96kbps) with the lowpass raised a bit (the "-bw" switch). so I was wondering, is there a software that uses mp3enc/fastenc that allows me to manually set the lowpass?

any help would be appreciated, J.M.

well, I wasn't able to find Cool Edit Pro 1.2, but I found Cool Edit Pro 2.0. It has FHG codec, has lowpass setting, that's all I need. Is there any disadvantage using v2.0 over v1.2? or is the quality of the produced mp3 files equal?

As I know, it's the same origin of encoder. I used to use Cool Edit Pro v1.2 to encode some voice to 32kbps with modified lowpass (higher) to achieve better quality.

Cool Edit (2000, Pro 1.x) include Fhg Alternate, bugged (see http://ff123.net/alternbug.html)
Cool Edit Pro 2.x / Adobe Audition include fixed Fhg Fastenc (without the infamous "Stereo collapse bug" http://ff123.net/fastenc.html)

The thing I've found with the Fhg codecs is no matter where you set the lowpass, very little above 16K ever gets encoded.

Even 320 files tend to be lowpassed at 16 with brief bits above this encoded.

after some testing, I've found that the codec in CoolEdit 2.0 nearly always produces worse quality files than the mp3enc demo mad.gif . The problems include pre-echo, stereo image problems, dropouts,... I've tried all quality settings, intensity stereo, different lowpass, etc. but nothing helps (note I was only testing 96kbps CBR). so the new question is: Is there a software using FHG codec which quality is comparable to the quality of mp3enc 3.1 demo (and adjustable lowpass)? I know I'm probably asking too much, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks, J.M.

Re: CPE Fhg codec...

The fast settings are a completely new encoder called "FastEnc", the slower settings (which are buggy in some releases) are supposed to be based on the older l3enc/mp3enc code.

IIRC mp3enc3.1 was very expensive at the time when they actually sold it.

Cheers,
David.

The only one I know of that is capable of doing what you want is mp3enc 3.1.

Maybe cooledit 1.x is worth looking for afterall.
