Full Version: Tool to copy tag info for multiple files?

After a few years of using MP3 files as my main storage, I recently re-ripped all my CDs to FLAC format with EAC. Now I've got higher-quality files with a mishmash of tags, and my old files with tags that I like.
Is there a tool that will allow me to "copy and paste" tags for large groups of files? I'd like to be able to copy the tags en masse from my MP3 files to the FLAC files (yes, I know that the tag format is different). If not that, at least from the MP3 files to the newer MP3 files I will transcode from the FLAC files for my portable.
And if there are 12 source tracks and 12 destination tracks, how does the tool allow you to ensure that the mapping of tracks is correct?
Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

foobar2000 can do this.

Just make sure that the source files are listed first, that the destination files are in the same order, and that you have the same number of source and destination files.

For example:

Source track 01
Source track 02
Source track 03
Source track 04
Source track 05
Destination track 01
Destination track 02
Destination track 03
Destination track 04
Destination track 05

Select the entire list (once you're certain they are in the correct order), right-click, and select "Tagging">"Copy Info Between Files". You will then see a dialog box confirming which source files goes to which destination files, which tags are to be copied, as well as an option to "Wipe existing fields from destination files." Once you've confirmed that everything is correct, hit "Run" and watch it go.

Try it with a few dummy files first, just to get the hang of it.

Have fun!

PS - The above instructions are for foobar version 0.9.3.1, though I'm sure that most versions of foobar have this function.

Many thanks. I have found other references to Masstagger, which I think is hte same thing that you are talking about. I have one little problem - my "Tagging" menu has no "Copy Info Between Files" option. And I downloaded something labeled 0.9.3.1. No "Masstagger" in my context menus, either.
I am at work at the moment. When I get home I will bring up the context menus and record what I do have here. Then maybe someone can tell me what I am missing. Is there a plugin for this? I didn't see one here at HydrogenAudio.
I'm confused. So close, and yet so far. headbang.gif

You could also give either MP3Tag or The GodFather a try.

If you don't see Masstagger listed under "Preferences -> Components", I believe it's because it's an optional component that you need to enable during installation.

Cosmo: Thanks for the info. I reinstalled, and it is simple, powerful, and effective
DARcode: MP3tag is awesome.

Thanks to all. I can now take all my MP3 tags and copy them to my new FLAC files. Back to living in the real world, after that.
