Howdy,
I cannot find a clear and easy to understand listing of what is the recommended build and settings to use with LAME. I am thinking that -V2 --vbr-new has replaces --alt-preset-standard?
What is the most recommended settings at 128k etc?
I just wish there was a clear and easy to understand link in the wiki...

List of recommended LAME settings

For ~128 Kbps VBR, use: -V5 --vbr-new

According to this page: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Lame_Compiles

The recommended version of LAME is now 3.97 beta 3

so -V 2 --vbr-new, would be the best to use for every music?
Or just -V2?

Cheers

The --vbr-new switch uses a new VBR routine that is both faster, and higher quality (for -V settings of 5 and lower)

-V2 --vbr-new produces files around 190 Kbps VBR, if that is too big, use a higher V number, e.g. V3 (175 Kbps) or V4 (165 Kbps).

Using --vbr-new is recommended, and on my computer (Athlon 64 X2 4200) it is about 20 - 30% faster.

The golden ears around here concluded that --vbr-new (''fast mode'') no longer comes with a penalty of decreased quality as it did in the past. In fact they think it often improves quality. (at least in the V0 to V5 range)

Things like this are answered in the [Discussion] topic, among other places.

Howdy,
Then why is --vbr-new not on by default? It's should be just -V2 for --alt-preset-standard quality...?
Much easier to promote just -V2 as the BEST setting for Music and Lame...

Maybe some tests need to be done, to PROVE it is better, so it is enabled by default?

I'm not completely sure of the technical details, but from memory, there is a possibility that some old front ends, or apps that use the ACM version of LAME could be broken by making --vbr-new the default setting.

So essentially, the LAME developers did not want to break compatibility with older applications.

I would go for -V2 --vbr-new if you want a replacement for --alt-preset standard.

It will be significantly faster, at slightly lower bit rates, yet transparent for nearly everyone 99% of the time.

But my hearing is pretty bad, so for MP3 I personally use -V3 --vbr-new. I could probably even get away with -V4, but I use -V3 as a bit of an insurance policy. On average it is only another 10 Kbps.

It seems stupid thats the only reason then. The older fontend/other p[rograms need to be updated. Not LAME.

IMO, I think Lame should have VBR-NEW on by default. The programs authors can then update their programs.

There was a bit of debate about it at the time, I'm sure you'll be able to find some threads on it.

The LAME developers have to ensure they don't break all the applications that rely on LAME. Whereas people interested in the best quality feel that the defaults should always revert to the best operation the encoder can provide.

So there are decent arguments either way.

Eventually this won't matter, because LAME4 will make new front ends mandatory, and a new ACM approach as well. It makes sense to only break backwards compatibility when the encoder moves to a major new revision.

Howdy,
What applications are we talking about?
How relevent are they really?

-V2 --vbr-new as -V2 is the way to go smile.gif

In essence though, Gabriel talks of the potential for issues with front-/backends, and no specific applications are mentioned.

QUOTE
If lame.exe was the only frontend, it would be easy. However, there are many frontends using Lame: lame.exe, lame dll, lame ACM, lame DShow, and a lot (really a lot) of applications using the lame dll or libmp3lame directly.
The change needs to be done inside the core of Lame (libmp3lame) without breaking all the frontends.
