i recently got a car stereo worth spending the money on lossless compression. my question is if i go to th store and buy a cd what is the bit rate of that? vs say the 1mbps i can download from music giant?

Please forbid yourself from participating in any internet community again before you learn nettiquette. Always type your messages without Caps-Lock. Reread them, and make sure your question is clear. Also, in this case, you would have been better off asking for advice before stating that MP3s are crap. It may also be due to the way your car radio plays back the said mp3s -- chances are, it's what you bought, that's crap, not the 15 year old technology developped by hundreds of competent developpers.

Supplementarily, most music stores online will offer lossy encodings at 128kbps. These will most probably be indistinguishable to your ears, on a good decoder, and especially in a car, with ambient noise, etc. When you speak of lossless, though, higher bitrate does not mean higher quality. It's already lossless, so you'd be better off choosing a codec that is smaller, lossless, and playable. Or simply encoding in high quality MP3 with LAME. Use the search function or read the multiple stickies.

actually if YOU read my statement i did not say that mp3's are crap i said that they sounded like crap. which perhaps is a bit strong but then again you guys seem to be pretty gloves off kinda guys so you can handle it. at the bitrate of standard mp3's which according to windows media player is 128-256. they sounded less than satisfactory.....better? and of course my equipment that you call crap(without knowing what it was of course) is much less insulting than calling a 256kbps bitrate vs 960kbps crap. i see you point so sorry.

in response to shades second paragraph which was much more helpful, and phrased so much nicer. i am downloading from musicgiant.com the average bitrate from them is 800-1000kbps. not 128. the car inquestion has 108 square feet of dynamat and is as quiet as a car can get that said i agree the car interior is not the optimum place for quality testing. however are you saying that a wma downloaded at 900kbps sounds no better than a 128 bit mp3? if so i will cancel my music giant account now lol.

I do apologize for any breech of nettiquete. Most forums aren't as strict, in the future if allowed i will endeavor to more closely follow accepted protocol.

Thank you for the pointer. THe terms of service are indeed helpful as well as informative. In this kind of forum i see where such strict rules are necessary.

nothing that goes in a car can play wma lossless. what you "bought" (licensed) from musicgiants is also encrypted (DRM) so you're going to have a hard time finding anything outside your PC that plays wma lossless w/ DRM. I would also suggest reading their whole terms of service before buying any more.

but you need a lot more basic knowledge than just some short answers will provide, you should start at the wiki (wiki.hydrogenaudio.org) + search and learn the basics, then ask more specific questions.
