The ACM codec with a 1997 copyright date gives very slight high frequency errors on the left channel, but only when decoding 128kbps mp3s ... The 1998 version installed with Windows Media Player 6.4 (which is not really an ACM codec) behaves like the ACM 1996-1997 decode only version.

That is l3codecx.ax is faulty, no? So whats better.

l3codecx.ax is a directshow filter, not an acm codec. Version 1.5 does have some playback quality problems with vbr. I don't know of any such problems with version 1.9 (good luck finding it though). A good alternative to that would be ffdshow.

As for the acm codec, the lame acm codec has supported decoding for a while now. It uses mpg123. I normally don't decode with acm codecs, but I don't know of any problems it has.

I hope that helps.
