Full Version: Alternatives to embedded cuesheet?

I am slowly migrating my music collection to WavPack lossless with embedded cuesheet. I like the idea of a single monolithic indexed file for every album. I had no problems until I realised the lack of support for this files in media players other than foobar2000, and I am worried if this will ever be supported or standarised. I'd like to play these files in Linux, too, and to be sure that I will be able to play this files easily in the future before I keep converting my collection.

Is there any other standard, well supported way of achieving this or should I stick to the traditional one-file-per-song way?

MP4. There's a thread around here that's dealing with this matter. You have to search for it.

The only player I know of for sure that handles the embedded cuesheets is foobar2000, although I haven't tested the latest version of vuplayer yet that claims to handle them. There is no support for them in Linux yet, AFAIK, although I have talked to developers about it.

One of the problems with handling the embedded cuesheet is that it often requires changes in the "guts" of the player itself. For example, I would like to add this to Rockbox so I could play images on my Nano or iRiver, but it seems that none of the core developers have any interest in this. Of course, I still play the images on there but I just can't see the track names or seek quickly.

I would like to add support for them in the winamp plugin also, but I have never seen the information on how to do this. Does anyone know of a open-source winamp plugin that handles an embedded cuesheet? Do the FLAC or Monkey's Audio plugins do this?

Don't be concerned that the embedded cuesheet is not standardized, though. It is an official part of the format and there's even a sample image+cuesheet+replaygain in the WavPack Test Suite:

mp3cue supports embedded cuesheets in winamp, but i don't think it's open-source and i'm not sure if it embeds cue sheets in a "standard" way.
