Full Version: [request] Customisable volume bar
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Hosted Forums > foobar2000 > 3rd Party Plugins - (fb2k)

I was wondering if anybody could create a plugin, toolbar or panel for a new volume bar?

I was thinking along the lines of something skinnable (custom slider bar, custom gripper, etc) but even one like the 0.8.3 version would be nice.

Thanks in advance, if this does get made smile.gif
foosion
Which user interface are you talking about?
Shinsou
i think a new volume bar won't change the whole situation. Foobar2000 needs own skinning engine to look realy nice and stylish. I've seen many original works on fb2k appearance threads, but none of them match itunes/wmp11 design level because of GUI limitations.

The volume bar depends on the windows skin you're using.

Yay. Foobar is for men. Skinning is for girls. wink.gif

foobar is about the music smile.gif

pffft foobar is about music yes but whilst we listen to the music we mock WMP , Winamp and ITunes users and we admonish fools who wannt a predefined skin for foobar without being willing to invest a little time and effort into creating your own work of foobar art.

Squeller put it best.....Foobar is for men and skinning is for girls.......unless theyre good looking in which case they can get away with anything they like.

But Ive gone ridiculously off-topic....get a decent VS and you will have a decent Volume Bar

Although the UI itself is native, its a fact that individual elements can have graphical attributes changed. It would be nice if volume control could have this too.
Blitzmeister
The VS only controls the color & the slider knob, butt not the triangular shape of the volume slider. smile.gif

Exactly, whats with everyone wanting crap skins
Emon
Agreed. Applications should look like native applications. Having support for skinning is okay, but proprietary skinning engines that don't let you shut them off and have your app look native (Trillian anyone) are annoying as hell.
chivas
it would be very nice, if the seek- and volumebar both have the same skinning possibility like the "customizable buttons".

i just use the popup one on the bottom right of the status bar.... tongue.gif

am I the only one that sets the volume from the preamp?
anyway, even if skins are useless for me I don't see the point in keeping up this fight against 'em...
you don't like skins? don't use them wink.gif
you like skins but nobody wants to work on a new UI? well... learn some programming tongue.gif

P.S.: I know girls that could beat you up if you tell 'em "skins are for girls" biggrin.gif (I agree, tho ^^)

and please... don't take this post as a provocation... the last thing I want is to light another useless flame about skins in fb2k...
musosticky
If I had the time or energy to have all my tracks replaygained properly and I could reach 4 foot away from my bed at night to change the speaker volume Id remove the volume bar......but i quite like the bar and slider anyway so it doesnt bother me

nah, I'm also setting the volume from my speakers with my handy remote control - so I dont need a volume control in any software player
I think its better anyway to not use a very high volume level on your soundcard but control the volume from your speakers - but thats offtopic

i have the logitech z-5500's and i like to keep it at 2.5 out of 20 bars of volume (it's loud!). then i refine the volume with mouse wheel over volume bar in foobar constantly. the difference between 2.5 and 3 on these speakers is often the difference that sometimes gets people complaining around the house.

so yeah, it'd be awesome to have maybe a volume control plugin that lets you manipulate how it looks or something else. i have a really convenient spot and idea for it that would complete the ui and make things more managable. why do people have to be against the idea anyway?

since some people argue foobar is about the music, a better volume bar would enhance my music a lot since i'm not going to change my modded hmmxp theme just to see my volume bar better.
moglenstar
Right, i've been kind of busy since i created this thread..

@foosion - i was thinking for columns_ui, but it would be nice for the default interface too

@Crissaegrim - i am aware that it relies on the visual style in use, but that's not what i requested it for. it would be nice to be able to make a seperate skin for volume bars, that are not defined by the control set of the visual style in use.

@Squeller - foobar is for boys, and setting up an awesome foobar config is for men laugh.gif

.. back to the idea of this thread now though.

the 0.9.x volume toolbar is a welcome upgrade to the volume toolbar plugin that was available for 0.8.3, but as a volume toolbar, compared to other components [trackinfo_mod/single_column_playlist/etc] it and most other "unskinnable" controls within the foobar interface deserve a little more attention as far as customisability goes.
Yotsuya
I'd like to see it changed to the slider used for the seekbar because I just dont like the triangle. But anymore I just find a comfortable volume and leave it.. then adjust the master volume from my receiver.
odyssey
I'd like to see skinning for volumeslider and seekbar aswell.

Although 0.9.x may have (dunno, i'm a new user) improved buttonskinning, I miss a third "click-active" buttonimage, instead of it just nudges the image - Maybe even some scripting support?
Russell777
Well good news are that now it's possible to implement a custom volume bar with trackinfo mod panel (i even made one),but the bad news are that because many volume related commands were dropped in latest versions of FB2K,and the only ones available are "Volume up" and "Volume down",it's putting heavy load on CPU.So it works, but i wouldn't use it.
CepiPerez

For you guys that says "Skinning is for girls..."

Why do you use Windows?
It's a Girl's Operating system too!
If you think that you're men then try to use another OS like Linux, or Unix...
blaxima
All right, settle down.
I do think that if you think a piece of software defines you as a person then you got problems.

I agree with Yotsuya. It doesn't have to be anything special, looking like the seekbar would be fine with me since that implements whatever visual style your using a little more. I really don't want it to be much more seeing as all the new eye candy can have a negative effect on one of foobars greates attributes.....its minimal use of memory!

But to each his/her own

musosticky
CepiPerez that was the most macho statement ever posted on here and was completely brilliant biggrin.gif

Only problem being that if I used Linux I couldnt use foobar sad.gif

I will stay on the girls OS for now
Nickoladze
maybe someone could make their own volume toolbar, and we could use that one instead of the default.
hrontar
I see this whole skinning problem has way to go back, and I don't want to pour oil on the fire, but still I have questions to the "skinning: whack!" side...

I understand you don't want the centerised skinning system of winamp for example. (me neither, it's really bad) But don't you think that foobar is depending too much on the visual style of windows? I think foobar is mainly a "man's" player because it's extremely configurable. So, if I want to configure my foobars outlook, I don't want to depend on windows theme tongue.gif .
From my point of view, you're being too one-sided. You could feel man enough if you could configure completely your foobars outlook, and also there is the option: just don't use it.

Horace said something a couple of years ago about aurea mediocritas, think you should read something about that... wink.gif
Kiteroa
I, too, would like to see skinning for the volumeslider and seekbar !!

wow, could you please tell me the name of this visual style you are using? It's so my type!! THX!

You find a topic about customizable volume and seek bars here -> foo_uie_wsh_panel

You'll also find a mod to get the same logarithmic behaviour like the original fb2k volume bar.

Get the component here: Egoh UI
