Hi All,

I a new to this forums, I need your kind help on an issue.

My requirement is to develop an app that will allow to convert media from one format to another for study purpose - my project requirement allows me to use existing media transcoders for my project. ie.: I can use tools like LAME, MEncode etc to transcode input files and have to genereate a report on the different output format.

The app will take a file as input - the input file can be any one of the following listed formats and will produce output into anyother format/same format (with some modifications) from the below list itself:

Video:
* MPEG-1 (VCD) and MPEG-2 (SVCD/DVD/DVB) video
* MPEG-4 in all variants including DivX, OpenDivX (DivX4), DivX 5 (Pro), XviD
* Windows Media Video 7/8 (WMV1/2)
* Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3)
* RealVideo 1.0, 2.0 (G2)
* RealVideo 3.0 (RP8), 4.0 (RP9)
* Sorenson v1/v3 (SVQ1/SVQ3), Cinepak, RPZA and other QuickTime codecs
* DV video
* 3ivx
* Intel Indeo3 (3.1, 3.2)
* Intel Indeo 4.1 and 5.0
* VIVO 1.0, 2.0, I263 and other H.263(+) variants
* MJPEG, AVID, VCR2, ASV2 and other hardware formats
* FLI/FLC
* HuffYUV
* various old simple RLE-like formats

Audio:
* MPEG layer 1, 2, and 3 (MP3) audio
* AC3/A52 (Dolby Digital) audio
* AAC (MPEG-4 audio)
* WMA (DivX Audio) v1, v2
* WMA 9 (WMAv3), Voxware audio, ACELP.net etc
* RealAudio: COOK, SIPRO, ATRAC3
* RealAudio: DNET and older codecs
* QuickTime: Qclp, Q-Design QDMC/QDM2, MACE 3/6, ALAC
* Ogg Vorbis audio
* VIVO audio (g723, Vivo Siren)
* alaw/ulaw, (ms)gsm, pcm, *adpcm and other simple old audio formats
[I took this list from mplayers site and have listed here since it matches most of my requirements]

Thanks in advance for your help.

How I see it:

- Kid enrols in audio programming class or whatever
- Gets this as homework
- Wants us to do it for him

Hi All,

This is not a home work - see my mail ID I work for a company. This is a study for our next project. I just asked which tool to use - I did not ask anyone here that they need to code it for me or do ti for me that I can submitt to my company. The frontend comparison code will be mine for which I need to use a commandline tool that will aid my transcoding need.

[Edit: the forum does not reveal my ID so you can confirm by mailing it to me and I will be abe to reply from my company ID]

I hope this clears the facts.

@Just Elliott: Did I ever mention - I need help in coding or pls do it for me - I just asked you to recommend me a linux transcoder that I can use for my needs - I think the question is clear.

@all_who_just_want_to_make_fun_of_this_thread - if you know any tool that is worth recommending for my needs pls do recommend it smile.gif , else you know what to do wink.gif

The prime reason that I had to post in here is that I am total newbie to media transcoding - and am able to use mencoder for my current needs - All I need to know is that is there anything better or MEncoder is the best over there?

Thanks for your polite reply.

i wish i could help you, but honestly, i have no idea; i'm new to linux myself.

this "non-windows" forum is very new, and dosen't have much of an audience yet, but as far as i know, its the only audio specific forum geared toward *nix users.

i wish you luck, and i hope you find the answers you are looking for, but you may be forced to look for a more established forum to post such a specific question. if you don't find what you're looking for here, distro-specific forums (such as ubuntuforums.org) are usually very active. or, is there a mplayer/mencoder forum? that may be a good place to ask... i don't know.

good luck.

Maybe ffmpeg?

Thanks all for helping - in my googleing too I find that MEncoder is far better than FFMpeg. Seems like Transcode supports only a few transcoding formats compared to others.

The primary reason I wanted to get more tools is that there might be some un-popular yet very functional tool that might help my work - as suggested by VCSkier - Linux forums will be able to help me better than here as non-Windows forum is still in early stage.

Anyways thanks all for helping me. I will make sure to visit again and post when I finally am done with my study that others might benefit from the results.

For now sticking to MEncode smile.gif
