I've confirmed from two other users that this is not a problem unique to my system.
I am a new "user" to Foobar 2000, so I downloaded version 0.9.4.1 and I found that I would get no output and the playback cursor would not move if the output wordlength was set to 24 bits. I can only get output if the wordlength is set to 16 bit.
However, version 0.8.3, which a friend was kind enough to send to me, was successful. So something was lost in the "upgrade".
Hope this helps!

Could it be that your soundcard doesn't support 24bit output (you didn't name the model)? Since the DirectSound implementation of 0.9 is a complete rewrite afaik it could also be that your drivers behave differently than with 0.8.3.

Bob, welcome to hydrogenaudio, the place where golden ears might become a bit rusty

It's good to have an experienced audio pro in here and I hope you can find time to share some of your knowledge with the forum members.
Hey Bob, what are the files you are trying like? In particular I ask because I noticed that I'm getting silence whenever I try to play any mono files in 24-bit mode. I know my soundcard can handle up to 32-bit depth (though internally it's downsampled to 24-bits I'm sure) and it works just fine in stereo mode up to as high as 192/24 (or surround up to 96/24) but the same mono file would produce silence both in Winamp and Foobar2000 while in 24-bit mode using DirectSound. It had no trouble using the wave output in Winamp however. Personally I'm inclined to say it's probably a soundcard driver issue since mono 24-bit audio is pretty darned rare under normal circumstances.
My suspicion here is that an older version would process the audio more and probably ultimately either produce a stereo output or even a 16-bit output so that it would work. I guess it would have to be the stereo option or I assume you would have noticed.
Of course, this doesn't apply if you are, in fact, using stereo files and getting silence in 24-bit mode using the latest Foobar. If that were the case, you'd have a pretty weird bug I guess since most of us get 24-bit stereo just fine in Foobar 0.9.x. (Sorry for dragging out a possibly forgotten thread -- though it's not THAT old -- just I was getting the silence and ran some searching here before I finally realized what was going on.)
