Congratulations on your move to foobar!!

At first look I know it can be extremely confusing to figure out how to get your foobar to look like any one of the many cool looking ones you see.
But while there are dedicated threads to various plug-ins it can be difficult to find the answer to a question that has been asked many months (and pages) ago.
Asking the same questions over and over make threads like the appearance one become bloated so you are encouraged to read through some of the thread at least
for an answer before you post.
Do not forget that there is a Search that you can use. Also, if you see a foobar you like a good idea is to click on that members name and look up the posts they have made.
You might find they have posted the answer to the question your about to ask already.

So if you are new to Foobar this is the place to post your questions. All you need to do is post a link to the foobar you want yours to look like in here with your
question and one of our helpful staff will be willing to help you out. If you have a plugin specific question LOOK in the 3rd Part Plugins thread first because
it is most likely you will find the question you have has been asked already and has been answered.

It will take some time and effort on your part but that's part of the fun of Foobar any ways. If you feel like any of this is too much effort then Foobar might not be for you.

Have you checked the Single Column Playlist thread?


To answer your Various Artist question, what I've done for my soundtracks is

1)add the tag ALBUM ARTIST=Various
2)In the Group By section of the Single Column playlist this is what I have
That will have them displayed in the header and sorted in the list properly

3) To have it display in the list like Artist - Song Title
you will need something like this in the Item Display part


It comes down to the proper tagging of your songs

no afaik its not possible to change group header according to selected or recent track... in various artist you should use "album artist" tag and put something like this in item code:
[%album artist%' - ']%title%

edit: but im not sure if i understand you question correctly. i thought you need to alter group header depending on playing song. if not so the first sentence in my answer should not bother you and just stick to second

For the record, that "Tech Explained" link applies to version 0.8. Not all the information is applicable to version 0.9.

Most of the tech info you find on that link is still relevant and very usefull to someone new to foobar.

Perhaps, in the same way that Case has been providing alternative packages including the more common 3rd-party DLLs, perhaps a "skinned" package could be made to get newbies started with a pre-configured good-looking, well-organised player "out of the box".

Not allowed by the license. Give up on this idea.
