Hiya folks,

I would like to ask:

Is the Install EXE just an unpacker that copies all the foobar files to Program Files (or wherever), adds shortcuts and registers soundfiles (didnt check that one) with foobar?

Would it be possible to give out a ZIP or 7zip Archive for the people who dont wanna install it to their machines or wanna take it on a USB Key?

Thx!

That would be illegal, because you're not allowed to distribute modified copies.

You can tell people how to carry it around, though.

If you want to install it on a USB key, you can copy the installation directory over, and then if you enabled user profiles, remove the user_profiles_enabled file from its directory so it stores the configuration under its own directory. Or you can start up the other copy instead of your regular installation and disable per-user settings, which has the same effect.

Just so long as you're assembling this up for personal use and not planning to redistribute it, that is.

Thx, of course for my own use......

But how could anyone make something other from it from a ZIP easier if he can do it also from an EXE installer? Somehow pointless..... you can install and change if you so much want to...

Therefore a ZIP is more like a help to the end-user than a threat to the developer... like 99% - 1% I would say...

Either way you would need reverse-engineering for deep modifications, wouldnt you? And for slight ones you can always take the installed product, modify and distribute further.... there is no safe-mechanism in the installer that would prevent people without a password or whatever to install it...

Shame we don't pay then, huh? tongue.gif I know what you mean, but surely it'll not too much of a problem to install it anyway? For future personal use you can copy the files installed to a ZIP as you like anyway? smile.gif
...Just Elliott
(you can open the installer with 7zip)

But you can't extract it because some of the filenames have illegal characters in them.

As you say, you don't gain any new ability with zip, so wouldn't that it pointless for users (not to mention annoying to developers who have already expressed a preference for installers)?.
