I have just started using Ubuntu in an attempt to move away from Windows. I have been ripping cds into FLAC using Grip and transcoding to MP3 using SoundKonverter. I have noticed however that when I use these mp3 files in iTunes the genre tag is incorrect. It appears SoundKonverter writes both idv1.1 and idv2.4 tags. The genre tag in idv1 is correct but in the idv2.4 tag it shows the genre number. Itunes ignore the idv1 tag and hence displays a number for the genre.

Is this a fault with iTunes or SoundKonverter or Ubuntu? Can I do anything to correct the problem? I would be grateful for any help I receive. Thanks.

The same problem here, using easytag instead of SoundKonverter.

I am afraid that iTunes is misunderstanding the idv2.4 tags, probably because it's expecting idv2.3. Can you use eyeD3 to check which tag versions are exactly into one of the MP3 files you're trying to import to iTunes?

Generally speaking, MP3 tagging is kind of a nightmare. Then just wait until you start liking classical music...

A workaround: Configure easytag so it uses v2.3 and ISO8859-1 instead of Unicode, and iTunes will show genres properly.

Blame it on iTunes undoubtelly.
