Full Version: Is there any real difference between cheap 2.1 speakers?

Well, I must buy one to have some sound from my computer after moving...

soundard: Aureal Vortex SQ2500, can be changed for some Audigy in the future
primary usage: music (types of music: http://www.last.fm/user/zima (probably many artists don't say much to many of you, but if you click their names you can view tags associated with them) (and anyway I doubt in category "cheap" knowing my musical tastes changes anything))

I'm generally trying to buy something as cheaply as possible...but in price range between 30 and, say, 60$ the absolute difference is rather small, so if there would be a noticeable benefit, I might spend a bit more. The thing is I'm not even sure there's a difference between speakers listed below (yep, basically only those are available)

Logitech OEM S200 - 82zł ~= 27$

Logitech X-210 - 132zł ~= 44$

Logitech X-230 - 168zł ~= 56$ (around the max I'm willing, eventually, to spend)

Creative SoundWorks SBS-380 2.1 - 96zł ~= 32$

Creative SoundWorks SBS-390 2.1 - 140zł ~= 47$
http://sklep.komputronik.pl/pelny.php?id=22623

Creative Inspire P380 2.1 - 129zł ~= 43$ (sweet spot of shitty 2.1 speakers, cheaper then the rest of "top" ones only because it doesn't look "cool"?)
http://sklep.komputronik.pl/pelny.php?id=8344

Creative Inspire T3030 2.1 - 160zł ~= 53$ (what I was saying above applies?)
http://sklep.komputronik.pl/pelny.php?id=22204

Creative Inspire T3100 2.1 - 161zł ~= 54$ (and here?)
http://sklep.komputronik.pl/pelny.php?id=32536

Creative I-Trigue 3220 2.1 - 219zł ~= 73$ (these and the next are rather too expensive...but are they worth it?)

Creative I-Trigue 3330 2.1 - 213zł ~= 71$

I guess there are too many choices and I'm not even sure if there's any significant difference between them...your advice?

In that price range, you should buy headphones instead.

I share the same feeling like you that these soundsystems sound all the same. A problem of these cheap soundsystems is that they easily distort if turn up the volume.

If you really dont want to listen to headphones, you should save your money and buy a pair of 2-way bookshelf speakers for 120$ and a used amp on ebay.

Is there any chance to test these systems(or others) in a store near to you?

Does size matter ?

I have headphones...however I have yet to hear from someone how can we listen to music from them, or watch a film, or sleep while listening to music, etc.

And to be honest that's not my feeling, that's simply something I suspect...so I ask here. (and it would be nice to be able to use them "loud"...but OTOH small distortion wouldn't be that big of a problem in such cases, besides the room is very small)

Also, what you suggest is currently out of the question for few reasons - price, size (dorm...), and the thing that I want/need speakers now

Small fellow up...
I ended buying Creative Inspire T3100 2.1 (instead of almost buying Creative Inspire P380 2.1; I've found a place in which T3100 was 2$ more, and since this is theoretically better (2-way) design, why not...)

And while certainly it isn't spectacular...it also doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with it, especially for untrained ear. For the price, good buy, I guess.
