I have a question to the hydrogenaudio forumers: what database to use for title find/submit? The old one from freedb.org (now maintained by Magix) or the one from tracktype.org (previosly freedb2.org)?
What are you thinking about?
As the author of tracktype.org I am admittedly biased, but I might be able to give you some information about where it is heading which will help you make up your mind.
First the bad news... tracktype.org is not fully set up to receive submissions yet. I expect to remedy that soon by writing a submission script, but it is not a very high priority compared to considerations like cleaning up the data.
The other problem is that owing to the infamous disagreement that we had back in June, tracktype.org is only getting updates from freedb.org at the beginning of each month. However I am able to get hourly updates from musicbrainz.org so that problem isn't really such a big issue.
However I believe the good news is pretty good. First of all tracktype.org is fast... really fast. It is handling millions of search queries per month now, and has still got substantial capacity in reserve. It is ideal for use with products like Magic ID3 Tagger which can perform thousands of queries in a very short time to tag and rename very large music collections very quickly.
The other major strength of tracktype.org is that the data is substantially cleaner than the data on freedb.org. I am using sophisticated parsing and analysis scripts to automatically convert the data into more consistent formats. As I make further progress in this area I will be posting announcements on the news page at
http://tracktype.org/news.html and there are regular releases of 'improved' data should you wish to set up your own music database.
Thanks for your consideration.
