Well, I was just surfing around, when I stumbled upon google trends.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=foobar2000&...ll&date=all

How is this to be interpreted? Could it be possible that we don't know about the majority of the foobar userbase since they don't speak enough English or just don't bother to post here?

This would quite make sense, since foobar is very interesting for this people as it has full unicode support. There is also this very well maintained Japanese foobar wiki out there (http://foobar.s53.xrea.com/fbwiki/) - so I suggest there are also users out there using it.

May the amount non-english speaking foobar users actually be larger than the amount of english speaking users or am I getting this wrong?

Another way of looking at this is :

In SE Asia, many PCs have pirated windows installed. This sort of eliminates upgrading of newer "free" downloads like WMP 11 and such. It is important that the media player is free and more importantly, hassle-free (in terms of license).

Also, there are many local and cheap weekly magazines that document what free software is out there and when updates are released. There are more articles on free software than in the US - PC Mag only does an article of free software once or twice a year. Here, there are half a dozen weekly magazines that cover free software each and every week.

And then, it seems the Chinese love all things hi fi / audio. Over at Head Fi, a large number of forum members are also Chinese / American Chinese. So it would be natural that they have an inclination to using foobar.
