I find that 0.8.3 sounds better than 0.9.4.2 but the latter has a much better playlist interface and utility. How can I configure 0.9.4.2 to sound the same as 0.8.3

I seriously doubt that that is true. In what way does 0.8.3 sound better? Check for active DSPs or differing output methods, which may make 0.8.3 sound "better" to you. If none are present, you are another victim of the placebo effect.
