Full Version: iPod 5.5G 80 GB has DRC ?

I really like the Nokia N91 and think its the best music player around when it comes to audio quality. However it just has 4 Gb of space and since I ran out of space, i got myself an 80GB ipod. I liked the sound especially compared to the 5G 30GB version. However when I updated my ipod software to v1.2.1 the sound quality improved a lot and now the device sounds more like the N91 which has dynamic range compression.

Hence I speculate that the 80 GB iPod has DRC built in which was absent earlier. Any comments ?

Any comments ?

Sure. Your perceptions of audio quality could very well be the result of expectation bias.

With a good, neutral soundcard you could perform some ABX tests to help validate your claims. (it is actually a requirement of these forums)

Dynamic Range Control <-- That'll be the one. Don't you just love acronyms?

But seriously, I highly doubt Apple would introduce such a feature, even more without telling everyone about this 'wonderful feature' or at least mentioning it in the release notes. They only state 'minor fixes'. I'm with evereux on this one.

A comparison of sound recordings from the two sound sources would also be quite sufficient evidence, if the differences are quantitatively obvious.

What do you mean? My iPod came with a Database Of Ribosomal Crosslinks from the Dynamics Research Corporation, based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Didn't yours? You ought to do a Documented Reference Check on yours and find out for sure.

But semi-seriously - the newer iPods do sound better- at least my 2g nano does, in side by side comparison to my 3G. Though I think it has to do with higher quality chips. To my ears is sounds like the decoder is better and the amp has more "ommph" - faster rise in power to keep up with dynamic music, rather than range compression which to my ears tends to flatten music.
