is there any free program that can do that?
i found a shareware one called audio tag editor that has a function called mass freedb it can do that but the program doesn't have a setting for using a proxy server which i need if i wanted to use a faster connection
besides it always hangs before getting all the tags
i would really appreciate your help guys, i never tried to tag an entire music collection from freedb but i also never thought that there is no program that does such thing. it doesn't seem like a very crazy idea!

I know that Tag&Rename will do it. It can use Amazon or Freedb, but 2 caveats: 1) I don't use functions like that as a rule, and although I've played around with it to test it, and it seems to work, I wouldn't know of any bugs/limitations, and 2) T&R isn't free.
Edit: Double posting

There is an option when installing T&R that tells it whether or not to search for files in subfolders when a folder is selected. I have never found it in any option menu after installation. I have mine turned off, since I only tag albums one at a time.
I think that if you reinstall T&R, and then tell it to search in subfolders during the installation (I think the default is no) then it should do what you want.

i know that option you can access it from the view menu but i don't think it can do anything other than giving you the ability of tagging a folder by clicking on the folder itself and not selecting all the files inside it but not multiple folders at once
man this is really annoying foobar 0.83 did it once with the freedb (multiple albums) command
and now it won't do it anymore and it is giving me this "don't tell me you have a cd more than 99 tracks" message
i am really frustrated and i kinda need to do this soon
i don't care about accuracy i can fix later the messed up albums i just need to quickly tag 1000+ albums from scratch (no tags currently present)
thanks for help anyways and any input is greatly appreciated
EDIT: after uninstalling re-installing foobar special 0.83 the multiple albums tagging worked again (seemed the plugin got corrupted)
but foobar is slower than audio tag editor so any other suggestions are welcome

thanks man
but i have mp3tag and its good i use it but it can't mass tag multiple albums/folders at once
it has 4 options under freedb
determine from inserted audio-cd
determine from selected files
enter
determine via web-search
and if i choose 2nd one i get
"the server failed to return a valid query response code"

Mine is working just fine mate.
For example i add "mp3" directory. 571 files. Click that button, select the second option and in a few seconds i have all the tags. I saw that it CAN'T tag individual files. Only albums or compilations that are in CDDB base.
For individual files you can try with "Filename to tag" option. But, of course, you won't have some fields (genre, year etc)

really?!!
that would be great, please tell me which version you have

Personally i have Mp3Tag 2.36a, but you can check to see if there is some newer version.
"Filename 2 Tag" option exists in AbanderTag Control and Tag&Rename too. I prefer Tag & Rename for the "Capitalize first letter" function.

thanks for taking time to answer my question buddy
i thought you meant tagging multiple albums at once from freedb
tagging from filenames won't help because the files aren't even named
anyway to save anyone else the trouble of searching, i found a program (its not free but 30 days trial without limitations) called pistonsoft mp3 tags editor, its almost the same (well its the same under a different name) as audio tags editor i talked about earlier in this post
it has a function called massive freedb and it can retrieve freedb tags for many albums at once in seconds
the actual writing of tags takes a little long but in my case all i need to do is name the files and some very basic tags so i choose to right just ID3v1 and it writes them in seconds too
i don't believe there is any other program at the moment that can search freedb for multiple albums at once
merry christmas everyone

i have tagged a lot of albums with Mp3Tag and they all worked ok.
I'll try yours too.
Merry Christmas mates.
