OK, age old problem.. I have a couple of hundred tracks ripped to nice sparlky Nero AAC+ (48variable), sounds lovely on my PC and on my Nokia N80. Except the N80 won't read the tags. According to Nokia, their eAAC+ stores its tag information inside ID31.0 tags, which seems a bit wierd... but thats why aac tags don't show up.
So question - is it possible to convert somehow the MP4 tags of my Nero AACs into ID31.0 tags? I'm up for experimenting, I ripped these tracks especially for my phone and I don't care if they get shredded in the process. But seeing 100 tracks like "Unknown Artist - 01_The Doors_-_Strange_Days" is annoying me beyond belief.
Anyone? :

It took me 3 days of trial and error with foobar's masstagger and loading testfiles to my nokia 3250 to find out I DONT F'KN UNDERSTAND NOKIA'S TAG SCHEME!
It works okay with ID3 v2 MP3 files, but with mp4/m4a files it's another story. Any tag info works using foobar's masstager in mp4/m4a files BUT GENRE. To be able to sort the songs in the cellphones player library by GENRE, you MUST set the GENRE of mp4/m4a files with NOKIA MUSIC MANAGER. Its inluded in NOKIA PC SUITE software, i suggest you to download the lastest version.
So if you want to sort music by GENRE in your cellphone, you must set this info MANUALLY AND INDIVIDUALY for all mp4/m4a files. I also suggest you to rename mp4 songs to m4a, the cellphone player wont recognize mp4 tags randomly even with the instructions i gave you.
I agree it should be easier and hassle free, but it seems nokia doesn't like huge and perfectly tagged libraries in their cellphones... sigh

Not answering your question I know but are you using the default nokia player on your phone? You could always try OggPlay, maybe that'd read the tags and you might find it useful
al_iguana
Dec 29 2006, 11:34
yeah, but afaik Oggplay uses Nokia's codecs to decode/read (aside from Ogg), so I doubt that would work. Its more like a system limitation.
I've tried editing the tags in Foobar... nothing. Winamp... nothing. MP3tag... nothing... even Windows Media Player... nada.
Yeah, I could use Nokia's Music Manager... but a) its 48 aac+ isn't that hot (when compared to Nero vbr), and it is only convenient if you're ripping from within that program. Because b) have you ever tried dropping 200 pre-ripped tracks into Nokia Music Manager? You have to go through each field, of each track, and manually enter them. It would take DAYS. (you can't select eg an album, and edit the artist and album title for the whole album. You have to edit each field of track. Its soooo slow)
According to Nokia help, their Music Player will only get the metadata from m4a files if they're tagged with 7-bit ID3v1.0 taggs. Bizarre
> m4a files if they're tagged with 7-bit ID3v1.0 taggs. Bizarre
So they have a .m4a file and tak an id3v1 on the end? nice following of standards there.

yup:
quote: "eAAC+ (.M4A) format. The eAAC+ format contains only the ID3V1.0 tag for track names and this supports only 7bit standard ASCII characters from a to z."

Nokia PC Suite allows encoding mp4 with tags. So it should be fairly trivial to do some samples.
al_iguana
Dec 29 2006, 17:13
yeah, if you rip with the Nokia Music Manager (in PC Suite) it tags them and the phone can read it. But not if you rip with anything else. Ironic thing is, that tracks ripped with Nokia Music Manager, if opened in Foobar, have no tags! arrrghghghgh < scientific term lol.
NMM has two rip modes:
m4a - mobile optimised (48 kps)
aac - ultra high (160kps)
Would it be ok to link to a snippet I ripped in Nokia Music Manager, so that someone who knows more about such things can analyse the tag and find out what they're doing that is different, or is such reverse engineering illegal?

The OP wants to use Nero's encoder. Is there some way to use it with the Nokia PC Suite? If not, sorry Nokia, better luck next time.
<offtopic>
Somehow, I have never been taken by Nokia's phones. I prefer my good ol' SE W850 anyday.

I have .aac files (no MP4 container) ripped and tagged with Winamp 5.3x which work fine with my 6288.

i just tried that, and without wishing to stir up old arguements, lets just say I could easily ABX the Winamp file and the Nokia Music Manager file.
Looks like I'll be sticking with Nokia's ripper until I work out how to (in)correctly tag Nero m4as. Output from the Nokia is ok, its just a nightmarishly crap piece of software to use.
Thanks everyone

You can also rip to AAC with EAC+Nero and tag with Winamp, just tried and it works.
You can demux Nero's MP4 into an AAC file with mp4box, and then tag it. Speaking of which, is there a way to automate that?
al_iguana
Dec 30 2006, 06:38
aha... that works! If I demux to an acc, i can tag it in winamp (id3v1) and then the Nokia picks it up. Tagged Nero music.... Fantastic!
so how do you rip/convert to straight aac using the Nero codec? a commandline for foobar, so I can attack my Flacs?
Me = excited
I've actually not figured out how to automate that, but if you find out, I'd love to know. It could probably be done with some sort of batch script.
al_iguana
Dec 30 2006, 09:10
well, our old friend dbPoweamp comes to the rescue. it can batch convert MP4 > AAC, and also FLAC>AAC if you select the Nero AAC option, and click the ISO checkbox in the Nero options (this will give you an MP4 and a straight AAC).
edit:
the ISO aacs produced by this method won't play on the Nokia. DarCode: what commandline are you using to rip to AAC in EAC? afaik the standalone Nero encoder can only encode to mp4?
al_iguana
Dec 30 2006, 14:22
OK, this works:
1) Rip to Nero / Convert to Nero
2) Use dbpoweramp to convert MP4 > AAC
3) Tag in MP3Tag or Winamp
three stages instead of one, but hell : its a lot quicker than Nokia Music Suite.
He's probably using Winamp's AAC encoder, which outputs AAC. However, it's not quite as good as Nero Digital.
Oh, and you can use foobar2000 to do MP4 -> AAC. Select the files, then right click and select extract tracks from the MP4 utilities. I don't know if this component is included with 0.9.x, though.
It will also automatically copy the tags from the MP4 to the AAC (if it has any).
al_iguana
Dec 30 2006, 20:49
damn, I don't think my Foobar has that... if it did, I could do the whole process in Foobar :/
It doesn't seem like 0.9.x has that option anymore... Does anyone know if there's a component for it?

That's a pretty bold claim.
Last time these two were tested they came out tied.

Maybe it would work if you ripped with Nero, converted to aac and then used foobar's freedb tagger to add tags automatically.

I dunno, on my personal conversion/listening test (on a Nokia handset, hardly the most hi-fi thing there is) the Winamp convo sounded muffled and echoy at the top end. The Nero one was a lot clearer... infact, so was the Nokia Music Manager One. Not saying the Winamp converter is bad, just didn't "do it" for me.
--edit
I uninstalled Winamp, deleted its folder and all the old plugins and skins, removed all the stuff from the registry, then did a fresh install. AAC conversions sound pretty good now - and my Nokia can read the tags. Woot!
One question - in the AAC conversion options, what is the difference between Stereo and Parametric Stereo? File size?
--edit
the difference is that the Nokia will play Stereo AACs, but not Parametric Stereo AACs

anyhow Winamp Pro can rip my cds/convert my Flacs, properly tagged, and put them on my Nokia. Not quite the Nero solution I wanted, but it will do brilliantly.

2-step conversion using foobarHere's what I do. I rip/convert tracks to MP4 using foobar and Nero AAC and then I use foo_run to execute a command-line tool named Tag and apply ID3v1 tags. That way all tags are automatically copied from the native format to ID3v1. 2 steps instead of 3, no hassle

.
"Tag" can be found
on Rarewares, under "TAG command line tagger" and foo_run
is here. Below is a command I use to copy the tags.
CODE
C:\Program Files\Tag\Tag.exe --nocheck --artist "%artist%" --album "%album%" --title "%title%" --track "%track number%" --year "%date%" --genre "%genre%" "%_path%"

Anybody using Easy CD-DA Extractor? I have FLAC'ed my entire music collection with this great piece of sw (I tried 8 different packages and ended up buying Easy). I plan to buy a Nokia N73 with a 2GB card and use Easy to convert to eaac+. Anybody that can confirm that it will work?

2-step conversion using foobar[...]
Below is a command I use to copy the tags.[...]
The command doesn't work for fb2k 0.9.4.5 and foo_run 0.3.4, here is what works for me:
CODE
"C:\Program Files\Tag\Tag.exe" --nocheck --artist "%artist%" --album "%album%" --title "%title%" --track "%tracknumber%" --year "%date%" --genre "%genre%" "%_path%"
Thanks for the hint anyway!
Now I convert flac images to m4a, copy to microSD card via card reader and then apply "Add ID3" to the files on the flash-card, nokia smartphone's satisfied.

I wonder, will their cutting-edge "multimedia computers" require the same ID3 in the end of MP4 file to be recognised by the built-in audio player?
