Full Version: Star Ratings Are Doing My Head In!

Hi Folks,

I've got a few thousand tracks I've recently ripped to WMA Lossless and I would like to start applying ratings to make them easier to navigate.

I use both Winamp and WMP11, both of which let me apply a 'star' rating.

BUT....

the rating doesn't seem too get saved as part of the .wma file, hence a rating applied in Winamp is only being recognised by Winamp.

So what happens if one day I switch to a completely different music player, or upgrade to a newer version of the same player? I sure don't want to go to the effort of rating all those tracks just to lose the data later on!

I've experimented with a tag editing tool (Mp3tag) which lets me add a custom 'Rating' metadata tag to the .wma file. Unfortunately I can't get Winamp or WMP11 to recognise or display this new tag!

I'm sure I'm not the first person to tie themself into a knot over this. Does anyone have any advice?

In WMP, upgrading doesn't affect your library, so ratings should carry over.

This is what Microsofts SDK says about rating:

The Rating attribute contains the rating of the content.

Global Constant

g_wszWMRating

Data Type

WMT_TYPE_STRING

Remarks

This is a file-level attribute.

Individual implementations in existing files use different scales and notations. Because of this, you should avoid using this attribute; there is no standardization from which to develop consistent user interfaces.

So there you have it, useless.

mp3 is a bit of a mess also, id3v2 has a preference value, but suggests that it should be unique to per user email address, great.
