uhoh!

Oh nos! Even though it says Billing/Support (it's a generic cPanel page) I hope this is not a legal issue.

Tomorrow is the last day of the year, so it's probable someone forgot to prolong a subscription... tongue.gif
rjamorim
No idea! I was enjoying christmas here at my parents town, and then all hell broke loose.

The problem is that, since I'm here, I can't call ScorLibran (the guy that pays hosting) because he is in Salt Lake City. I'll try mailing him, but he's not the fastest replier...

I also lost ftp access, but I hope everything is still there.

I'll try to keep you informed.

Edit: Maybe some nice guy in USA would be willing to send him a SMS message? smile.gif

If you can, please PM me and I'll send you his cell phone number.
Sebastian Mares
I could call if you want - I don't have anything else to do with my Skype Out credit. tongue.gif
Sebastian Mares
OK, I left a message on his mailbox since he didn't pick up. That made 2 cents - now I am broke... Still 1.56 € to get rid of. tongue.gif

Edit: Also sent an SMS.
rjamorim
Thank-you very much smile.gif

Now we must wait...

I have backups of a somewhat old version of the HTMLs, and I also have rjamorim.com backed up in its entirety, including the listening tests page and rrw.

I got a reply from Chris:

QUOTE
I've called them twice this morning, and am trading emails with them as well to get this fixed ASAP. They say I "abused their web server", and overutilized resources. They guy on the phone knew nothing. They never sent me an email or called my phone. They simply took the site down. Stupidity. So the guy tells me to resolve it with emails.

Guess we are the receiving end of web host stupidity. Again.
Digga
don't let this trouble interrupt you celebrations for the new year (if there is any that is), take your time and sort it out or chose another host. this is what they kind of tell you to do anyway, isn't it?

well, thank you guys for your continued effort in this matter and for providing us with fresh compiles (John et all), hosting and information smile.gif

Indeed, that sounds like a scam to get us to upgrade to plans that cost 4x more than what we are currently paying. So far they failed to tell us what precious resources we are overusing (CPU, disk, memory, bandwidth...) and how we are overusing it.

It can't be disk or bandwidth as both are carefully kept within the quota. And as for CPU/memory, the vast majority of the site runs on static HTML and HTTP downloads. The only PHP script that gets used often is Mac's dancer, which distributes bandwidth consumption among several mirrors.

Depending on your diskspace/bw needs, I may be able to host you for free on my machine (hosts kraln.com and other projects of mine). I own the machine (it's a colo, not a dedi rental) so it's entirely mine...

just my opinion, but for someone with apparently... 0 posts here (ergo no outside bin/offtopic) and randomly offering a server, i'd probably go with a more trusted company.

If there is a temporary need for hosting the binaries, I'd be happy to help out. Just give me a PM.

I also offered Robero to host RW since I now have 10 GB of webspace and unlimited traffic, but I think they got it sorted now. wink.gif
rjamorim
Thank-you very much for the offers, friends, but Chris sorted out the issue. He decided to bite it and go for the VPS package. Well, it's his money...

For anyone who needs anything in the interim, you'll find a lot of it at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jfe1205/. It's not pretty, but most of it's there! wink.gif

It seems to me Chris was more hurried than me to have RareWares running again. I was only planning to sort it out when I return home, next weekend...

Hosting plan for 8 € per month: http://all-inkl.com/eng/index.php?cna=&cnb=

Their English is a bit rusty though. I asked what they mean with "Traffic inklusive" ("Transfer include") and they told me that the traffic is no longer limited.

It's a very valuable source for all to find up-to-date already compiled .exe and .dll files.

I had tried to access RareWares before reading about it being down here on HA.org and some four letter profanities came to mind seeing it down.

I don't remember if you had a Donate button on RareWares or not (never noticed), but it's one idea to offset the cost! wink.gif

I remember there was a fail of 1 router and all their servers weren't accessible at all... huh.gif

I've got my stufff there as well. For me it is enough, but bandwidth was the bottleneck IIRC?
Sebastian Mares
I didn't experience downtime during the past few months. They used to have some problems a year ago, though. Also, it wasn't their rooter that crashed, but the company who has the servers AFAIK.

I don't see the point, bandwidth is not really a problem for RW (and, for all that it matters, we do/did have our own tracker).

I thought I'd throw that idea out since I hadn't noticed anywhere to donate, seems I wasn't missing something after all.

Please no popups unless they're the frozen variety like grape flavour, however v1agra could keep things up! laugh.gif

I know from my own experience that they block "dangerous" client IP ranges like certain ones from south america (maybe more). They were getting lots of hacks from that area and would only unblock upon request on a dedicated server. That way most of my buddies over there were unable to access a site I was hosting, making me switch to another hoster.

Yeah, I don't think so. wink.gif

They've finally been beaten into submission, and are migrating the site contents over to a new VPS account right now. It took the involvement of their inept leader, and an offer of training in web server administration and customer service by me. "If you can't do your job, then I can teach you." tongue.gif

Hopefully the site will be up and running within a few hours.

Thanks for everyone's patience, and sorry for the availability problems. As far as I know, this has been the first serious downtime issue for Rarewares (since it's been on this host, anyway), and we're taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The idiots at the hosting company seem to be working on it...
Simba7
One of the reasons I built my own webserver, so I don't have to put up with hosting companies and their BS policies.

I'd like them to define "abusive" for me, really. I ran a HTML-only server on an old Mac IIvx for a few months running OpenBSD. It didn't bog down a bit. It did after I installed PHP and started adding php areas to my site. Then everything got moved to my old Proliant 6500 (Quad PPro 200 w/FreeBSD 6.1) and it sits there ever since.

Now, unless these morons are running a 486 for a web server, it shouldn't be CPU or IO abusive at all.

Just wish the U.S. had between 10 and 100mbps to each house. *grin*

OK, I waited 5 hours. Here's my experience:

www.rarewares.org still points to this goddamned page:
http://esc91.midphase.com/suspended.page/

The rarewares and rjamorim folders are still empty

Important folders like applecore and upload are still nonexistant

I still can't access through SSH, either using the root account with password ******
or any of my accounts with key pairs.

I still can't access whm.

Summary: you guys are still shafting us.

Hello,
I have moved your domain(s) to your new server. There are a few steps required on your end to complete the migration
1) update all mysql connection strings, changing "remotemysqlhost" to "localhost"
2)
register nameservers. Login to WHM and choose networking
setup->nameserver ip's. Make a note of the IP's. Then login to your
registrar and register a domain host or a domain nameserver using the
provided IP's. WE have some tutorials here:
http://midphase.com/tut

Please let us know if you require further assistance

Yeah, sadly it's always the same thing:

You only really miss things once they're gone.

I love RW as the one place to get all my audio encoding software, always go there and check before encoding a new batch of my CDs.

Hope you'll be back soon, keep up the good work guys!

Use while you can! I'm going to start copying data and then I'll try to convince Chris to move out. I'm sick of these guys and their threat (they want me to apologize for calling them fucks or else. hah. I strongly believe they are not the ones that should be getting a big apology)

Running for me now, too.

I learned the hard way that you should always make backups of your website. I had a webhost go completely out from under me one time without warning. I still had most of the static files for my site, but all of my data in the database was gone, never to be retrieved. I do monthly backups now, which is relatively easy if the host uses cPanel.
