Hi I have a question. I own a linksys router and use comcast internet which is off a cable modem. Anyways I would like to hook my external hd to the router then be able to access the interent. Why you must say? I would like to put some stuff on it and then be able to access it over the internet. Is there a way to do this without a computer? The reason I dont want a computer is I dont want it always on in my room where this is and if I can just leave my External on and be on the router I would think I can keep it quiet and stuff. Anyways can it be done and what is the most inexpensive way to doing this without it being to diffficult?

Thanks

either

a. get some sort of usb2lan converter (i dont know of any that would actually support connecting naked disks)
b. get a disk enclosure with a lan hole, like

or
http://www.xpcgear.com/usblandisk.html
or

c. get a router with a proper usb2 connector + usb2 enclosure (i dont know any that would support naked enclosures)
mourges
I have a d-link 624S router that does have the appropriate software on it to allow a VPN connection from the outside world - ie the internet. The router has a USB connection that would allow you to connect a USB drive. My suggestion is to purchase one that has the spin down software loaded - like the Maxtor one touch or Lacie drives, otehrwise a cheaper USB enclosure will cause the HDD to fail early through excessive spinning.

The Linksys NSLU2 was pretty much built to do exactly that. Your needs are mentioned in the features at the top of the page wink.gif
