Full Version: illiminable codec and seeking in WMP

Hey

Just wondering whats the deal when trying to use WMP with illiminable's installed codec to play the flac files, whenever I try to seek it just goes to very beginning.

Any news? This project hasn't been updated since 06 of feb.....

This is not news, but friendly conversation--why even bother with WMP?

I used to fiddle with codec packs for WMP but it is too much of a hassle. What good was getting Media Center PC for my home if I can't use listen to my favorite loss-less tunes in MC? Bad choice on my part, but forgive me, I was young and impulsive... and knew nothing about media and computers. I hope I have learned one or two tricks since then.

trust me, I've been around the block

Foobar still isn't as user friendly as.....well...pretty much anything, and still doesn't have video support, which is fine but now that I have begun getting HD movies (.mkv) more of a problem...its good for pure audio people who don't like movies which I wish i was (but great potential nontheless)

plus, with vista and all, I'll try my luck with ms again, see how far I get

the integration is key

If the illiminable project shouldn't experience the needed bugfix in the near future you could also try the Winamp player. Unlike foobar2000 it also features video playback support, in conjunction with the ffdshow filters it will play back practically every imaginable video format. At least my humble self is quite happy with it in terms of both audio and video.

Not too far I guess. It's unlikely that Microsoft will ever add open source audio and video support to its software. Maybe you should think about converting your flac collection to WMA lossless if you're really going to stick with Windows Media Player.

There's another release (the "unstable" release with bugfixes) which is just as stable as the vanilla version AFAICT.

IMHO it would be worth checking out. smile.gif

The unstable version doesn't entirely fix the filters' problems, at least in Vorbis' case, but FLAC seeking is supported by it. I just made a quick test to verify this.

I messed around with the Illiminable directshow filter and WMP for weeks, but I finally gave up and went to Foobar2000. FB2k has out-of-the-box flac support and gapless playback.

good...i'll use the "latest" (as in a year ago) beta to fix my problem

lol i was going to mention winamp...but thats just bloated crap, and useless as wmp comes on computer, same as any other media

i figure why hassle getting completely rid of wmp (besides getting n version) and just work with it...too many programs nowawaydays
tempnegro
well i just installed that...fucked everything up lol...WMPTSE still isn't showing year and whenver i try to play its chipmunks

thank god for foobar for temporary relief, but...i still must...... find good directshow...codec...

Because some of us use the xbox 360 as a media center extender, which is frankly a spectacular setup... but sort of tough to get working well with FLAC files (but possible).

I wish the illuminable filter would support replaygain tags though... badly.

- Best metadata lookup features out there
- Superfast handling (faster than MediaMonkey on my PC) of large libraries without the learning curve of fb2k
- My ATI Remote Wonder supports it out-of-the-box
- Automatic scanning and adding of new media to library, among other features that are either unavailable or have to be paid for in the case of other players

WMP's also very extensible, as WMPTSE has shown. The fact that the illiminable DirectShow filters don't work properly is the fault of illiminable's developers, not WMP or MS. DivX and ffdshow, among others, have shown that it is perfectly possible to add glitch-free codec support to WMP.

Hi,

Sorry there haven't been updates for a while. As someone else mentioned, there is an 'unstable' release which improves some things, and really isn't that unstable.

I'm not sure what the problem is with the flac seeking, it's not universal as far as i know. There is actually 3 different formats of flac which also complicates things. I just haven't had much time lately. As much as i'd like to spend all my time on this project, unfortunately i have been really tied up with other things. I'd certainly like to see other developers interested in ongoing development.

Since the last update, i've had my final exams, graduated, was on holiday overseas for a month, then christmas, then moving house/country. I'm no longer contracting and now have a full-time job. I hope i can spend more time on this in the near future, but at the moment, i have a lot of other commitments.

I presume that you have the xbox 360 working with flac?
How did you manage that? My setup: Vista Ultimate and 360 as an extender.
Am able to play flac on the PC in WMP and the MC. I can see my flac files on the xbox 360, but when i try to play them i get a "audio error". Look around a ot, but can't seem to find a solution. Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Thanks for the contribution so far.

I can understand, you have your own life waiting ahead, improve it only when you got some time, or ask someone to help, lots of nice guys around, you can depends on them.

hi,

I was just wondering if anybody figured out how to use WMP with flac tags.. I donīt know why, but even with WMP Tag extender installed my WMP11 wonīt regognize or change any Tag info in flac file..

I also have the seekbar problem, everytime I try to skip a part of the song it starts all over again 0o.. very strange.

also a word to the Foobar / WMP discussion:

I would switch to foobar immediatly if there would be a nice and user friendly UI but in this department MS has still a big advantage IMO.

but to get WMP11 working the way you want (all lossless formats in library with tags and eerything) is pretty much impossible ATM, correct me if Iīm wrong..

SO, what you think about this? maybe another alternative besides foobar and WMP?

There's a support thread for that tool here. You might want to look into it.

No, you're quite right. However, you could try WMA Lossless instead of FLAC, if that's OK with you.

You could try MediaMonkey at least for native FLAC support. Just bear in mind that it's slower than WMP11 at handling large libraries, nowhere near as lightweight as foobar, and doesn't have the metadata lookup capabilities of WMP (this is probably where WMP shines the brightest because pretty much no other player on the market can match it in that category). Otherwise, it's a decent compromise between the extremes of WMP and foobar.
