a friend of mine has been talking about streaming some of his huge music archive (mostly containing goa trance music in (192kbps)mp3 format) for a small group of listeners. the problem is that he has an adsl connection that is only capable of 512kbps upstream.
i've though of the possibilities for him to reencode his mp3s to ogg (Q0-Q3) and streaming them. but since i don't have any experience with streaming myself, only listening to them wink.gif i need some opinions from more experienced users about this idea of mine before suggesting it to my friend.

i realize that reencoding generally is a bad idea but still it's better than nothing (or maybe not..)

one way -> in windoze you can setup an ogg stream using oddcast dsp (winamp plug) and icecast2 ( http://www.oddsock.org/tools/ ), anything in the playlist gets transcoded to an ogg stream (quality depends on dsp settings).

from my explorations:
- bitrate peeling is not working in this concept yet (or any other concept?)
- there is no way to set up a multicast system

at least it's a start.
i guess it might work if the windoz box is used as the source server, although i should do my homework and rtfm before i make any conclusions.

anyway thanks for your help!
