Hey guys,

I want to transcode my FLAC files to the Mp3 format. I wan't to know is it recommended to copy the Replay-gain values from the Flac to the MP3 file? Or is it better to calculate them new for the Mp3 file?

And if you think it's ok to keep them. Could you tell me a good program which kopies the tag values, when I transcode my files? Would be good it can copy the picture-tags as well.
I already tried some programs like "OmniEncoder", "Multi frontend" and "Winamp". But all of them just copy the standart tags like Artist and Album.

Thanks in advance!

You should recalculate the replay gain values. The peaks will be much higher because of Gibb's phenomenon (and other reasons). The gain values will also vary. Significantly so at lower bitrates.

Thanks for the reply.

And what is with copying picture-tags? Any program suggestions?

Mediamonkey can convert audio between supported formats (flac to mp3 definately supported), to either new files or replacing the source file.

The free version mp3 encoding will eventually expire, but you can just replace the existing lame_enc.dll with the one from rarewares (or where ever) to continue to encode.

Replay gain tags and album art are not transferred however all other supported metadata should be.

No, Mediamonkey doesn't support the copying of picture-tags (flac to mp3 at least). You should try it out before you recommend anything!

Anyway, thanks for trying.

Isn't there any program to copy picture tag's from flac to mp3, while transcoding?

mp3 uses id3 tag format which does not have a picture tag.

But it is possible to include picures in mp3 tag's. And that's what I mean!

ID3v2 has a picture frame (APIC). In fact the FLAC picture metadata format is even based on the ID3v2 APIC frame.

I've added this functionality to BonkEnc. It will be available in RC 2 to be released in about 2 weeks. See the BonkEnc News thread for more details.
