unsure.gif Hello!

I just happened to observe that the lowpass being used by LAME at -V5 appears to be 15826 Hz - 16360 Hz, as opposed to the lowpass described at the LAME wiki (16538 Hz - 17071 Hz).

Thanks!

this is because with -V3 and higher, lame encodes nearly nothing into sfb21 (above 16khz)

So why is there a difference between VBR and CBR then? VBR -V5 (~128kbps) has a low pass at 15826 Hz - 16360 Hz and CBR 128 has a low pass of 16538 Hz - 17071 Hz. Since VBR is considered to be the better choice, why is the low pass below the CBR equivalent?

Because the lowpass is not the result of VBR or CBR but of the use of a preset in the VBR case?

vbr uses a different algorithm than cbr. (maybe the 16k lowpass has something to do with the sfb21 "bloating" in vbr, so it encodes into sfb21 only when it would cause no bitrate bloat)

Thanks for the explanations, but if I may suggest, it would be great to have the wiki updated re: the different presets and their corresponding lowpass cut-offs. It may be sound trivial, but the discrepancy is still confusing. unsure.gif
