Full Version: Utilities for the iPod
Hydrogenaudio Forums > CD-R and Audio Hardware > Audio Hardware
Great Jay
Hi @all,

I just bought an I-Pod some weeks ago but figured out very soon that some utilities would be very useful ohmy.gif

So before sending the order I just would like to know which utilities you are using with your I-Pod?
Especially what are you doing to protect you I-Pod (leather case, crystal film cover set...)?
Are you usin' the original Apple products or other stuff?
Where did you bought them?

I am also looking for an "alarm clock" with which I can use my I-Pod. Any suggestions would be really nice!

So thx a lot.

I'm sorry to nit-pick . . . but it's iPod. tongue.gif

I have a Nano 2g, and I bought Bang and Olufsen earbuds and a leather case.
If you have a regular white iPod, then you don't need a case, but for Nano it's a must.

~ 5G iPod 60GB [local shop]
~ iSkin eVo3 (best hq skin; real protection) [www.iskin.com]
~ Matching eVo3 earphones [www.iskin.com]
~ Apple USB power adapter [CompUSA]
~ Monster iTV Link iPod video cable (AI ITV IP-10) [Best Buy]
~ Apple dock (came with unit but not much use; s-video connection but remote control is limited)

Have not yet purchased external listening device but like the Tivoli iYiYi or iSongBook. Very good sound and still portable. I have listened to a number of alarm-clock like devices and been very disappointed about sound quality. Most are awful. Better do a lot of listening for yourself.

Not unless your iPod never leaves home. Even then I would cover it. They scratch easily. Some even right out of the box.

With mi 60GB iPod I use:
-Apple Dock
-Apple iPod Dock Connector (USB+Firewire)
-Apple AC
-Brando Ultra Clear Screen Protector http://shop.brando.com.hk/ultraclearscreenprotector.php

I also had a iSkin to protect my iPod but for me it was to big and destroyed the cool look of my iPod. So I use the Brando Screenprotector which are great. You get two films (?) which protect the whole front and back, not only the screen - and you don't even see it! Now I just can put my iPod in my jacket. smile.gif

I think the eVo3 looks very cool! cool.gif
Other skins I tried (not Brando) were loose, annoying (headphone/connection jacks won't stay in), let in dirt and small scratches. I hike frequently, and backpack.
If I get another iPod for home use, I'd consider the Brando. Could not get to Benny's link, but did find this one...

@Zane: Yes, I had an eVo3, too. I know it looks cool, but it isn't as noble as the ipod design IMHO. smile.gif
Brando isn't a skin, it's really only a protection film. So you also can use it with the dock.

Thanks for the review btw. smile.gif

Berny... Sorry for previous nick miss-spell. sad.gif I see/know Brando isn't a (typical) skin. I have similar clear protector sheet on my iPAQ and i-Mate. Agreed the iPod looks "noble" as is... just in my case (no pun intended), need something more substantial for the rough terrain. My last iPod (mini) got very bruised one trip with a no-name silicon skin. My own fault. crying.gif NP on the review link wink.gif

Ha! I too use only a iSkin eVo3 with my iPod. I went through 5 different cases before finally ordering this one off the internet. Anyways, here is my list:
5G 60GB black iPod
iSkin eVo3 eclipse case (probably the best case on the market)
Apple iPod AV connection kit. It comes with a USB2.0 dock cable, a USB2.0 AC adapter, the newer dock with IR port, the standard video cables, the small IR remote, a whole bunch of dock adapters for the older iPods.
Apple iPod Hi-Fi system. No, it doesn't produce "Hi-Fi" results but it is plenty powerful and does a good job.

That is all I have. As far as getting a alarm clock with iPod integration, I can really recommend the iHome iH6 unit. iLounge gave it a pretty good review as it has many features along with decent sound quality. Keep in mind that many of these iPod formatted speakers don't always have the best sound quality. Most of them are just notebook speakers given a little more power. If you want power, then either get the Bose SoundDock, iPod Hi-Fi, the Altex Lansing inMotion iM7, or a dedicated 2.1 PC speaker system.

Enjoy your new iPod.

I recently bought a 5.5G 80GB HDD iPod.

Additionally, I bought Apple's AV connection Kit (docking cradle, remote control, power supply for USB with different sockets, AV cable) for 99€, 2 Belkin cases for 25€ each and one pair of Sony In-Ear headphones (EX-90LP) for 99€.

Through iTunes Music Store, I additionally bought 4 Games for my iPod (Zuma, Bejeweled, Tetris & Sudoku) :-P

Additionally, I am thinking about buying a Klipsch iGroove for 150€ since IMO this sounds much better than the iPod HiFi at half its price.

Well I would also say congrats but you bought an inferior Ipod.

Anyways for scratch protection the best thing out there are the Invisible shields:

Or you could also go with a Best Skins Ever:
