Hi all,

I just wanted to know if the command for adding ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags to LAME 3.90.3 encoded files is the same for those encoded by LAME version 3.97, which is:

CODE
-V 2 --vbr-new --add-id3v2 --pad-id3v2 --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n" %s %d

I'd also like to know if there is any advantage to using APE over either or both of these ID3 tags. Thanks.

Yes you can use this command line just have to change the command "-V2 --vbr-new" to "--alt-preset fast standard" the change to -VX just affect the versions 3.95 or later, the thread of recommend setings talk about this, if you look to the external window of lame encoding you will see that it is using Stereo and not Joint Stereo like in the -VX setings.

Yeah, I forgot to take the V2 --vbr-new out of there. Guess I got too lazy with the ole copy and paste. I tend not to use the "fast" within my command line, though. Any advantages?

Also, what's the major difference between Stereo and Joint Stereo? Thanks.

You're completely wrong. There is absolutely no difference whatsoever between -V2 and --preset standard (and the other presets/Vx settings).

No, you're wrong. There is a difference with LAME 3.90.3.

I think it is the same, but check by running lame --longhelp to verify.

APE tags are usually used to store replaygain tags (not the one in the lame tag). It is also more flexible. I just let foobar2k put APE & ID3v1 tags on my mp3 files when I add replaygain. More players understand ID3v2 tags though.

I would stick with the old vbr routines with older versions of lame (3.93 and earlier). The only way to find out if the speed increase is worth it is to ABX.

Just one note on this.. I wouldn't use joint stereo IF I intended to try to upmix to 5.1 later during playback (matrix or dpl2) or if I wanted to use a vocal remover dsp (aka removing the common 'center' channel). Otherwise stick with joint stereo.

Incorrect. The recommended VBR setting for 3.90.3 version was not the fast standard. The new and faster VBR didn't come out until later. The closest cousin to -V2 in 3.90.3 would be --alt-preset standard. But I don't know why you would want to use an older version of lame. Unless you just wanted to do it for kicks.
