Wikipedia explains what MTP is. Everyone knows what USB mass storage is.
Several pages suggest that some mp3 players can be one or the other, and a firmware upgrade is required to switch between the two.
MTP is cool for syncing, good in that you can't corrupt the files by disconnecting the player mid-transfer, and essential for handling some DRM'd files.
UMS is cool because nearly everything supports it, and you can just drag and drop on most OSs without getting involved with Microsoft stuff if you don't want to.
Well, there I was ignorant of all this, dragging and dropping files to my free mp3 player in UMS mode (I assume) under XP SP1 (without Windows Media Player 10, or any specific drivers). All files played fine. Data files could be transferred too.
Then I plugged the player into a different PC, one with Window Media Player 10. The player is recognised as an MTP audio device. However, all the tracks I've downloaded onto it cannot be seen on this PC. Also, the two demo tracks which came with the player, though they can be seen, can't be played unless copied onto the PC.
Is there an easy way of accessing an MTP device in a UMS-like way on this PC which has WMP10? How come this device works in UMS mode on my old PC?
I'm sure there's a good webpage somewhere which answer this question, so can someone just point me in the right direction please? - many thanks!
Cheers,
David.
