Full Version: Is my CD-ROM getting worn?

My CD-ROM can't seem to "find" some of my CD's when I insert them.
These are not copy protected CD's. I have successfully ripped CD's with copy protections.
Some of the CD's I have ripped previously with no such issues. I'm re-ripping now with different settings.

I usually get some "Timing Problems", but as I understand it that's just when EAC has to go back and rip a section again. The read and test CRC are usually the same so the rip is accurate. Maybe it's my drives that's crap (NEC 3540A)?

I have an older drive in another computer that I'm not using anymore. I could probably use the CD-ROM from that (a Sony 32x) to rip my problem discs.

EAC does not go back and re-read in burst mode. Timing problem means that it slowed down reading that sector, but it does not mean there was an error at all.

Good to have that confirmed as I do use Burst Mode with Test and Copy smile.gif

Just out of curiosity:
Is it likely that I'll have less Timing problems with another CD-ROM like Plextor or Lite-On?

I've been having the same probelms with my Sony CRX320AE drive not recognizing certain discs or taking a long time to recognize them (mostly new Taiyo Yudens). I just got off the phone with Sony tech support and based on my DriveCheck results (media errors) and the the other info I gave them, they said that it appears to be just an issue with the drive being fussy about recognizing certain discs (my drive has trouble recognizing certain Rhino/WEA discs also). They said if my drive was truly failing, then I would be getting unsuccessful burns and rips, which I haven't. So it's probably something I just have to live with.
