does anyone know if its possible to upgrade the lame version to 3.97 when using wavelab? I know its probably not the best forum to ask this but I have asked the same question on the steinberg forum

I guess you should replace the following DLL: C:\Program Files\Steinberg\WaveLab\lame_enc.dll

UPDATE: Uh-oh, I replaced it and LAME ceased to work. Apparently the bundled DLL is modified and there is no way you can update it.

Hm, I think LAME's license forbids that.

I thought the same, if you modify the library source you must release the modified source under the LGPL
