Full Version: ID3v2 compatible Tagging

Hi!

Until now I have encoded everything in LAME 320cbr, but I'd like to go lossless as HDD space increases. So far I have tagged all of my MP3s with ID3v2 tags.

I'm looking for an easy way to copy the tag information of lossless files to mp3-files (if I recode the lossless files to mp3 for playback in car or sharing with friends etc.) and I am not satisfied with ID3v1 support.
If I've got enough time I'd like to rip some of my CDs again to encode them in lossless format; therefore I'd need to copy the already existing ID3v2-tags from the corresponding MP3s to the new lossless files.

How can I accomplish this?
Which lossless encoder supports ID3v2? Is it possible to convert ID3v2-tags to APEv2 or FLAC for example?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

You can use the popular FLAC. It has is own taging system.
And to copy the tag infos use Mp3Tag.
For transcoding you could use BonkEnc. It also copies the tags.

So is BonkEnc any good? Do you get fast accurate results?

What do you mean with accurate? BonkEnc can transcode for example from FLAC to MP3. More you can read here.

foobar2000 does this automatically

How powerful are these FLAC-Vorbis-Tags in comparison to the APEv2 from Wavpack?
Right now I'm deciding to whether use FLAC or WavPack...
Mangix
WavPack if you're planning to store it on your comp. FLAC if you plan to use it on mobile devices, home theater systems, and stuff like that. WavPack offers fast decoding and better compression than FLAC.
Paul Brain
Yes, I'm planning to archive my music on the PC; for mobile use I intend to re-encode the files to MP3.
Would Wavpack or FLAC be "easier" to transcode to MP3 (my favourite is LAME -preset insane, and not all frontends have the ability to specify command line parameters)? Is it possible to copy the ID3v2-tags to Vorbis/APEv2 in this process? Would any tag information get lost? I think my decision will go towards the standard which tags are more similar to ID3v2, but so far I haven't found out if this is APEv2 or Vorbis...

Thanks a lot for the answers so far!

both FLAC and APE2 tags can hold pretty much anything.
Paul Brain
Ok, thank you.

Last Question: Which codec do you think is technically superior? In terms of programming style, error robustness etc, experience of the coders ;-) etc.
Feel free to contact me per PN if you don't want to type your opinion into the forum.

Thanks!
