hey everyone,

ive been trying to find a program that can import an MP3, AIFF, or WAV, and separate the layers of recording (guitar 1, guitar 2, bass, drums, vocals etc.) so they can be deleted or the volume can be edited...im certain it exists because i have seen it before while people play along to a song pre-recorded with the absence of the layer they happen to be imitating.

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Such a kind of Layers doesn't exist.
It would be possible if instruments would be in a specific audio band and no other instrument would have content in the same audio band, but that's very unlikely to happen.

You could have those instruments separately, edit and mute them etc. but you can't simply import a file where those instruments are already mixed.

Separate parts (i.e. each instrument) are often recorded to separate tracks. Having the original recordings, it is quite simple to select which parts will play and which will not. Mixing the separate tracks is one of the last few steps to producing a finished product, such as a CD. The finished product cannot be unraveled back to the inputs.
