Full Version: WTK: Converting FLAC to AAC for Itunes?

I've been using Foobar 2000 & ItunesEncode.exe for about two years now to encode FLAC to AAC. It works pretty well but I am looking for other options. The command line encoder is 2+ years old now and there must be a better way.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Most of my FLAC files are from USENET or peer-2-peer and I like to go to AAC (mp4) to save space.

Thanks

You can use Nero's AAC encoder which is updated consistently. Both iTunes and the iPod now support complete gapless playback of Nero AAC files.

Yes-I just tested this myself with the latest Nero encoder, Itunes 7.1.1, and an up to date Gen5 ipod video 30 gig. When I bought the unit 1 month ago, the unit played with gaps with nero aac, so I ended up filling it up with lame mp3 files. Oh well-I am leaving it as it is for now-how quickly things can change.

Ive been thinking about going to AAC as the ipods seem to have problems with VBR LAME files (some of my songs just skip to the next track half way through). Is the ipod still having problems with nero AAC files? Is it better to use the quicktime/itunes encoder? What is the easiest way to transcode FLAC to quicktimes AAC/m4a?

Ouch! That's interesting--I've never had that, although, until very recently, I used LAME exclusively. What version of iPod are you using? And does it definitely not do that with other encoders?

It happens on my wifes 2nd gen ipod and my 3rd, with lame vbr ~ 128. I have read that others have this problem, but I have not tested other codecs. IT does not happen with all songs and seems to be somewhat random.

FYI it doesn't matter how old iTunesEncode is, it just calls iTunes from the command line. Thus, if you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer, the files you encode will use the latest version of iTunes AAC encoder.
