Full Version: Converting WMAL to ALAC using iTunes - glitches

Hi All,

I have all my music ripped to WMAL (around 800 CDs) for use with a Roku SoundBridge. Recently, Roku added native support for the Apple Lossless codec, so I decided to move across to using ALAC (as it allows me to serve files from a NAS device, which isn't possible with WMAL on the SoundBridge).

I installed iTunes 7, set it to use ALAC and dragged all my WMALs in - it took about 100 hours, but I then had all my music in ALAC. Or so I thought...

Last night I switched the server over to use the ALAC files, and discovered that I now have brief glitches between tracks which should be continuous (and which were continuous when served as WMAL from WMP11). I've downloaded an ALAC->WAV converter and looked at some of the files, and when compared against the same track ripped to ALAC directly from CD by iTunes, the last fraction of a second of the file seems to be missing - or in other words, it looks as if iTunes has made a mess of the transcoding.

Is this a known problem? It looks as if I am going to have to transcode again (because I'm definitely not re-ripping 800 CDs...) Is there a converter that will do this properly for me? Should I go via WAV instead and then get iTunes to import the WAVs?

Any advice gratefully received! TIA.

You may want to head your question to the iLounge forums, I am not sure anyone has much experience with WMA lossless conversion in iTunes here.

I have heard of some bugs in that iTunes doesn't always play nice with WMAL files. You can try dbpoweramp, which can convert WMAL to ALAC. If dbpoweramp doesn't work then you may have to go through the WMAL->WAV->ALAC. That would be a pain as all your track ID information would be lost and you would have to re-enter it.
