I legally downloaded some wma files with DRMV7 and tried to play them with Foobar. But it won't play them and gives an error: Unable to open item for playback (IWMSyncReader::OpenStream failed (C00D0BBD)):
"<file destination> "
times 20 or something. Winamp and Windows Media Player play these files without problems so i expected itīs just a codec addition which i need or something.
So what do i need to play these songs?

If you go with DRM, then you locked yourself into either microsoft or apple. No, there is neither the possibility nor the need for fb2k to solve that. You agreed to vendor-lock-in by buying DRM. Thats why its called "Digital Restrictions Management". DRM is not a codec. It is copy-protection via encryption. Everyone is locked out of the musicfile, except of those few which the corporations decide to support. Neither you, nor software developers have any control over your music anymore.

The solution? Dont buy DRMed music. Either that, or live with the consequences of DRM.

A workaround for making the files playable in foobar would be to remove the DRM protection by burning the files to an audio cd. This can of course only be done if the software you use to play the files and the DRM policies of the files allow such an operation.

If so, you can use foobar to play the audio cd or rip the tracks back to your harddisk as WAV. Then either store them uncompressed or re-encode them preferably with a lossless codec to avoid further loss of quality, as the original files were already compressed.

Concerning the general discussion about DRM, I must definitely agree with Lyx in all aspects: Never, ever support the use of DRM protected material.
