Full Version: Filename to metadata

This is my first post but I’ve been reading HA for a while now….

I just finished ripping my CD collection (300 Cds) to WAV using EAC.

The filenames are formatted as “artist – title – album”.

I understand that WAV files do not support tags and that is fine with me, I just need to get the artist, title and album as metadata in Itunes and WMP 11….

What I’m looking for is a program / script that will parse the filename and copy the corresponding fields in Itunes and WMP11. I found a solution but it’s for the MAC OS & Itunes only (dougscripts.com) and I’m running Windows XP…so unless I find something for windows I will have to transfer all the files to a MAC, run the script and copy everything back to windows (still only an Itunes solution and not WMP 11)

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi,
I don't remember whether wav supports tagging (Either APEv2 og ID3, try it), but if you use Foobar2000 you can easily use it to tag your files using data from filename, and thus letting iTunes and WMP read it.

right-click on file(s) in playlist, select "Tagging->Manage Scripts", in the window, click "Add", select "Guess values from filename..." and put in "%artist% - %title% - %album%" in the text field. =)

WAVs do not support tags, what I'm trying to do is writing the info on the metadata stored in Itunes and WMP11

Are you sure the solution you found even works across PCs/different OS installations? Just asking.

IIRC, the iTunes library is stored as a XML(?) file, which facilitates external editing. While I know WMP11 uses a database of some sort, I have no idea whatsoever what format it's in or how to access it externally. In fact, I doubt it's possible.

You are right the solution I found works only for Itunes...
I'm still looking for something similar for WMP11

I already knew that. My question was how you're sure that you can perform the needed operation on one computer and then have the desired results show up on another.

You have to move everything from the PC to the MAC, then you run the script on Itunes once you are happy with the results you move everything (wav files and the library file xml) back to the PC. Now all you need to do is edit the xml file to change the address of the wav files

I am quite confident, that you will not find a solution to this problem which can be implemented with a reasonable amount of effort. You will probably end up transcoding the WAV files to a format which supports tags.
