What about a freeware program that does nrg images to audio cd

I'm going to guess from your syntax that you're looking for a program which will burn a Nero disc image (NRG) of an audio cd to a CD-R.
If that's the case, then the answer remains the same: if disc image burning is all you're looking for, you can't do much better than
ImgBurnIf you're looking for a more general purpose burning tool, might I suggest
cdrtfe?

imgburn says that the file is not supported. could it be that the iso file wasnt converted correctly from the nrg file? will imgburn do the nrg file directly???
"ImgBurn supports a wide range of image file formats - including BIN, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI."

imgburn won't burn cd's. It's a DVD burner. Try www.burnatonce.com

does the same thing. it burns 400 mb. the size of the image on the cd, but it doesn't become an audio cd. Am I missing something here?

What? That's utter nonsense:

ImgBurn is a lightweight
CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!

ImgBurn WebsiteIt's very likely that the NRG is corrupted, if the resulting CD won't work.
If you want to stop wasting blank CDs, download
Daemon Tools, mount it virtually, and try to play it. That'll tell you if it's a valid image or not.
just another vote for imgburn (was very easy to burn cd ubuntu image to dvd for example...).

Donunus,
You have not mentioned what does it burn if the result is not an audio CD. Is it a data CD or just a useless coaster? If it is a data CD (i.e. the resulting CD contains about 400 MB of standard files that you can browse) then your disc image is not an image of an audio CD.

You can burn the .NRG image with the freeware
Nero CD-DVD Speed, and you can post an image of the "coaster" details scanned with it too fro us to better understand what you're actually burning.
Anyway, ImgBurn is a superb tool (I've donated on 2 occasions) and is my CD/DVD writer of choice.

+1
Of all the ISO burners I've tried, it's the only one offering Verify mode for burning .iso images.

Just mount the iso onto a virtual drive using Alcohol 120 or Daemon. (Just use google to find downloads)
You can then treat the image file as if it was the original CD and use any piece of burning software you desire.

I always test images on a virtual drive before I burn them... saved a lot of discs that way.

Yet another vote for ImgBurn. Image burning could not be easier. You just drop the ISO on it and you press the large button.
It can also burn data CDs and DVDs. Just select:
Mode, Build
Output, Device
Since v. 2.2.0.0, when support for Unicode file names was added, it is the program I use to burn discs in Windows. Excellent application, and reliable.

imgburn is pretty good.
There is a plugin for Total Commander, which can read ISO files as archives. So you may look into the ISO file. Also as already suggested I would try Daemon Tools a mount the image as a virtual drive.

WinRAR and 7-zip are also capable of reading .iso images. Except for this one .iso image I have that's unopenable by 7-zip (but openable by WinRAR, and mountable by Daemon-Tools).

That's very possible, but I think the OP is limited to Windows.
