I've searched the forum a bit, and haven't really found a solution that doesn't have some shortcoming.

I'm having trouble finding a tagging scheme that I like. I don't like simply using "Various Artists" for the Artist tag, because then my Artist playlists don't add the album at all.

Currently split/VA albums are tagged/named as follows:

TRACK NUMBER - TITLE - ARTIST


Example:

01 - Queen of Pain - Alkaline Trio
02 - While You're Waiting - Alkaline Trio
03 - Rooftops - Alkaline Trio
04 - God Deciding - Hot Water Music
05 - Russian Roulette - Hot Water Music
06 - Radio - Hot Water Music
07 - Bleeder - Hot Water Music

This works mostly fine. However, I usually use album list in foobar to sort through music by artist->album->track. So, if I go to Alkaline Trio->Split EP->songs, the HWM songs will be missing.

I can sort by album and find the album, but obviously I have A LOT more albums than artists to sort through.

I'm curious to see if any of you people have any better ways of tagging your music.

I browse by genre, artist and album, so it's not too far to scroll for the EP. Also for various albums I add an extra genre tag "various", so it's easy to find the right album.

ALBUM ARTIST: "artist1 & artist2"
(track-) ARTIST: "artist1" or "artist2" (per-track based)
TITLE: "title"
