Full Version: difference between q5 and q6?

I realize that q5 offers smaller file sizes, at arguably the same transparency as q6, but can anyone explain to me the stereo/point stereo (I think that's what it is) issue?

I've read that only q6 and above maintains the original stereo image, is that true?

Thanks...

Yes it does and no it doesn't really make a difference it's just noted for the most concerned audiophiles. wink.gif

Um, that's not really true. For information regarding stereo coupling in Vorbis 1.0, please look at my posts in this thread: (some other info is incorrect there as well.)

The lossless stereo maintains phase information. However, point stereo does not keep phase information.
In addition, as for point stereo, a level(audio energy) change will grow big than lossless stereo.

A current Vorbis encoder changes two stereo modes of lossless and point in small frequency unit(residue). smile.gif
